I was never one for protection filters, and over the years its been mainly for dust and water as opposed to impact damage protection. And this is why, one 70-200mm canon f2.8 L used for years by a motor sport fan that looks very well used and abused, but was optically good. 15/07/2008 He finally bowed to pressure from shops and camera club members to use a UV filter for protection. He bought a good one (hoya pro 1). off he trotted to a local rally (gravel track) and one errant stone shattered the filter. some of the damage to the lens is from the glass shards from the original impact the big looped one is from where he took off the filter( he had to to keep on shooting ). Still good for me as I now have this lens for pennies as the bill to replace the front element is over ?300. PS it is far from the first time this lenses front element has been hit by stones or other objects, the filter is what caused the worst damage. Admittedly if he had taken the lens home and carefull pulled out the glass less damage would have been done, but a whole days commission would have been lost. I have just fitted a new front element bought from canon direct for ?95. its nearly 10mm thick. no wonder it could take knocks and flying stones so much better than a 1.5-2mm thick filter
