VALGAN Chambord Weinmann model 605
VALGAN Chambord Weinmann model 605
Weinmann mod 605 side-pull brake calipers. These were quirky calipers. Many people found (find) them terrible to center. The front bolt concealed within the black plastic housing accepted a very narrow metric socket tool. This helped to hold the caliper centered while tightening... unfortunately, the Weinmann tool was hard to find and now very rare. A "normal" 4 mm. socket from a ratchet set is just a bit too large to fit inside the 8 mm opening of the plastic cover. Otherwise, these brakes work quite nicely. They were probably an interim step between the crude older 500-type models and the more modern Carrera styles of the early 1980s - which were a far more modern looking style, and even had the standard cam-style quick release levers like any Campagnolo or Shimano. These calipers have a peculiar backassward fitted q/r lever - mounted to the upper arm.

Important: Tape input shaft splines with paper tape to protect input shaft seal when splitting transmission apart and also when putting transmission casing halves back together. The splines are sharp and will cut seal if left bare. This instructional is for reassembly but can be used for disassembly if you start at the bottom and reverse the order. You will need a metric wrench and socket/ratchet set, rubber hammer, steel hammer, punch, flat and phillips head screwdrivers, pry bar to split casing, tape, small telescopic magnet to remove steel balls, tube of black silicone, 4 hands necessary for 5 minutes, useful for 3.5 hours. Hope you find this helpful. :) - Louis Tucker and Dale Rodia
