X-24 Expeditious "X24 twice entered Bergen Harbour and attacked the Naval Dockyard at LAKSVAAG which was under German control, well protected by coastal defenses and minefields and thirty miles from the open sea. On the first occasion under the com¬mand of Lieut. M. Shean, D.S.O., R.A.N.V.R., the German Ship BARENFELS was sunk. On the second attack under the com¬mand of Lieut. H. P. Westmacott. D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N.. the floating dock used by the Germans for overhauling and repair¬ing U boats based on this port was destroyed. Successful exploits of other British X craft include the severe damaging of the German battleship TIRPITZ in Alton Fjord, the sinking of the Japanese cruiser TAKAO in Singapore naval base, the cutting of the Singapore/Saigon and Singapore/Hong-Kong telegraph cables, and the D-Day reconnaissance and marking of the beaches for the Normandy invasion." X-Craft ,the bow section(seen here) of X7 was recovered from a Norwegian fjiord in 1976 and presented to the IWM . This machine was involved in the crippling of the German battleship Tirpitz during WW2 in September 1943. The crew laid charges beneath the Tirpitz and then ,damaged, scuttled X7 and escaped to the surface . Captured by the Germans they were stood on the deck of the Tirpitz when the charges blew . In total 6 X-Craft took part in this quite famous raid , all were lost . The Tirpitz was eventually totally destroyed by Avro Lancasters of Bomber Command on the 12th December 1944 Towed by HMS Stubborn Commanding officer A. A. Duff Passage Crew: P. H. Philip J. Magennis F. Luck Operation Crew : Lt B. C. G. Place L. B. C. Whittam R. Aitken W. M. Whitley Lt Basil Place was awarded a Victoria Cross for this action .
