The M134 Minigun is a 7.62mm air-cooled, percussion-fired, multi-barrelled rotary gun, which is mounted on the Chinook helicopter. The gun is electrically driven from the aircraft’s 115V AC supply and is mounted on either the port or starboard side of the aircraft in the escape hatch or the cabin door respectively. The gun is fired manually, using belt-fed ammunition at up to 4000 rounds per minute. employing Gatling-style rotating barrels with an external power source. In popular culture, the term "minigun" has come to refer to any externally-powered Gatling gun of rifle caliber, though the term is sometimes used to refer to guns of similar rates of fire and configuration, regardless of power source and caliber. Specifically, minigun refers to a single weapon, originally produced by General Electric. The "mini" of the name is in comparison to designs that use a similar firing mechanism but larger shells, such as General Electric's earlier 20 mm M61 Vulcan. The Greenbrier was manufactured from 1961 to 1964 and used a rear-mounted aluminium block, air-cooled engine similar to Volkswagen vans produced at the time. Chevrolet's research fround that the Volkswagen owners were happy with the size and configuration of their vans, but found them underpowered. Chevrolet attempted to rectify this by outfitting the Greenbrier with a standard six-cylinder 95 horsepower engine.
