I hate the hot spell we're having, but it means I'm having to get particularly creative with the outfits so that I don't also wilt from the heat. I was feeling fanciful today, despite the 90-degree-F temps. Here's more flamenco influence. --Black cotton voile tank dress with deep V neckline, underbust seam, full skirt, a fantastic tiered hem in circular gores, plus contrast seaming in plum, lilac, and acid green, and embroidered floral medallions on the skirt (there's also one on the left side of the chest, but it's not visible under the jacket). (April Cornell) --Purple linen short jacket with front ties (only the bottom one is tied), 3/4 sleeves, baby ruffles at neckline and cuffs. (Newport News) --Black patent t-strap sandals with low wedge heels. (Ross) --Hair twisted up and back on the sides, the rest put into low braids on either side of the head, with a couple of purple silk flowers on one side. --Necklace of silver scrolled links and dark amethyst cabochons; drop earrings of dark amethyst beads wrapped in silver wire spirals. When the greatest vocalists of “the greatest generation” are discussed, the Andrews Sisters – who embodied the “sound, look and attitude” of the Swing Era – are always included. And rightfully so. The cheerful songs and genuine optimism of “America’s Wartime Sweethearts” gave hope to the entire country – and the “homefront” musical Over Here! paid tribute to that iconographic trio for a new generation of listeners. It also took a stylized look at the fashions of the era – epitomized in this “patriotic” red and blue, floor-length wrap-gown worn for the show’s finale. Replicated in miniature, this creation is comprehensive in detail and colossal in craftsmanship. Not only has the red and blue silk fabric been densely hand-beaded (with literally thousands of beads), this dress is completely hand-stitched – no machine work. Cut on the bias, the vibrant beaded pieces are used in dramatic opposition – a red cubital sleeve on the left arm, a blue arm-length sleeve on the right; the left shoulder is blue, the right red; the left side of the gown’s front is blue, the right red (with a diagonal seam at back going from right shoulder to left foot where the red-blue transition occurs). And the dress has been finished with a silky, iridescent plum lining. The “braided” neckpiece that defines the v-neckline is made up of ten sections – all hand-beaded and gold- and silver-sequined. One additional section adorns the gold overseas cap that sits on her perfectly curled, 1940s-style, ash-blonde upswept coif. She’s been stockinged, and shod in low-heeled, gold-strap sandals (allowing you to see her needle-modeled “toes”). “While the sargeant [did] the trainin’, [they did] the entertainin’…over here!
