1880 Phipp & Co Redcliffe Street Bristol BS1
1880 view of Phipp & Co warehouse Redcliffe Street, Bristol. 1863 An inquest was held by coroner Mr J.B. Grindon on the death of thirty-five-year—old John Bull, who died following an incident at work. Bull was a warehouseman at Phipp & Co.’s wharf on Redcliffe Street, and, on 22 january he was standing talking to a colleague when he was suddenly hit by a 14lb weight, which had fallen through a pulley hole in the loft above where he stood. He was taken to the General Hospital with serious head injuries and died there on 27 January. The only person in the loft at the time of the incident was a labourer named Selway who was known to dislike Bull intensely Selway admitted that he had been near the pulley hole and that his foot had accidentally touched something, which might have been the weight. Although Mr Stiles from Phipp & Co. questioned every one of the workers, all denied any knowledge of how the weight fell. The inquest jury was left to determine whether Bull's death was a freak accident or a deliberate attack. With no evidence to support the latter theory the jury returned a verdict of ‘accidental death’.
