Gn 49:29-32; 50:15-26a "Jacob gave his sons this charge:“Since I am about to be taken to my people, bury me with my fathers in the cave that lies in the field of Ephron the Hittite, the cave in the field of Machpelah facing on Mamre, in the land of Canaan, the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite for a burial ground There Abraham and his wife Sarah are buried, and so are Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there, too, I buried Leah– the field and the cave in it that had been purchased from the Hittites.” Now that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers became fearful and thought,“Suppose Joseph has been nursing a grudge against us and now plans to pay us back in full for all the wrong we did him!” So they approached Joseph and said“Before your father died, he gave us these instructions‘You shall say to Joseph, Jacob begs you to forgive the criminal wrongdoing of your brothers who treated you so cruelly.’ Please, therefore, forgive the crime that we the servants of your father’s God, committed.” When they spoke these words to him, Joseph broke into tears Then his brothers proceeded to fling themselves down before him and said, “Let us be your slaves!” But Joseph replied to them:“Have no fear. Can I take the place of God? Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good to achieve his present end, the survival of many people. Therefore have no fear I will provide for you and for your children.” By thus speaking kindly to them, he reassured them. Joseph remained in Egypt, together with his father’s family He lived a hundred and ten years He saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation, and the children of Manasseh’s son Machir were also born on Joseph’s knees. Joseph said to his brothers: “I am about to die. God will surely take care of you and lead you out of this land to the land that he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” Then, putting the sons of Israel under oath, he continued,“When God thus takes care of you, you must bring my bones up with you from this place.” Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7 R. (see Psalm 69:33) Be glad you lowly ones; may your hearts be glad Matt 10.24-33 Jesus said to his postles:“No disciple is above his teacher, no slave above his master. It is enugh for the disciple that he become like his teacher, for the slave that he become like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more those of his household“Therefore do not be afraid of them. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Fath
First to visit - the resident Pika
First to visit - the resident Pika
As I settled into my resting place high atop a boulder field, looking down on what would be Snow Lake (if I could see it through the clouds), I soon found I had a host of "friendly neighbors". First to check me out was the pika, followed by a hoary marmot, and then the official welcome wagon host - - at Townsend Chipmunk, who made me feel welcome by stealing part of my trail snacks. Pika [Ochotona princeps]. Cute, adorable, irresistable, this is why I bought my Canon G9. I have always wanted a decent photo of one of these little mountain critters that I so admire, and now I have one. (Telephoto to 24X when shooting small images using optical and digital combined). From the Family Ochotonidae, they probably got their most common name from a Russian word spelled with two "i" s, which means to "squeak" and squeak loudly they do. I have been startled more than once to have one of these little guys "sound off" while working my way through a high mountain boulder field. [Nyyyeeeeeeeeeeek!] They go by many names: pika, coney, boulder bunny, rock rabbit, whistling hares, etc. They ARE related to rabbits. Spunky, tough, and resourceful, while their boulder friends the hoary marmot, hibernate all winter, the pika never do. Instead they literally "make hay while the sun shines" and store the dried grasses underground, to live off during the winter. July 22nd, 2008 - with Mt. Rainier Park totally enveloped in a thick white misty cloud - - I hiked up past Bench Lake, then across a snow field. There I climbed a large boulder field on the west side of the valley, where, if the clouds cleared (they never did), I would have a spectacular view of Snow Lake below and Unicorn Peak behind it. From my perch high atop the boulder field, I broke out some trail mix and my small plastic tri-pod for a couple of self portraits (I was hiking solo).Joining me figuratively for my snack break were hoary marmots and pikas galore. Joining my literally for my snack break was the cheeky little Townsend chipmunk. After enjoying a long relaxed rest at the top of the boulder field I traversed along the cliff base then hiked down the slope to where Unicorn Creek empties into Snow Lake. Visibility was still less than 100 yards, but the quiet serenity made it a memorable visit to a place I have been many time in many seasons. I saw lots of wildlife that day including a pair of silver fox, who now appear to be making themselves a steady sight in the area (we saw one of them last month in the same general area). But my favorite mountain creature has always been and always will be: Ochotona princeps - - the pika.....nyeeeeek!

Why We Get Sick: The New Science of Darwinian Medicine
The answers are in this groundbreaking book by two founders of the emerging science of Darwinian medicine, who deftly synthesize the latest research on disorders ranging from allergies to Alzheimer's and from cancer to Huntington's chorea. Why We Get Sick compels readers to reexamine the age-old attitudes toward sickness. Line drawings.

Is our tendency to "fix" our bodies with medicine keeping them from working exactly as they're supposed to? Two pioneers of the emerging science of Darwinian medicine argue that illness is part and parcel of the evolutionary system and as such, may be helping us to evolve towards better adaptation to our environment.
