Ring making for 7-19-08 Rod, Bar File and Saw..Silver half & quarter dollars
Matching wedding bands I made from silver half and quarter dollar coins. A technique pioneered by prisoners of war (?), tapping a coin many 1,000's of times against a harder smooth surface, then sawing & filing out the center. The smaller ring rests on George Washington's cut out profile. Curiously, the words turn from the opposite sides upside down relation, into same 'upright' legibility! I’ve had this 1964 Kennedy half dollar lying in a drawer for longer than I care to remember – so I polished it up... and here it is. The coin was struck in 90% silver the year after the president’s assassination. In 1965 the silver content was lowered to 40%, and in 1971 it was eliminated altogether. No American coin today contains such a high ratio of silver. The coin’s obverse was designed by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse by Frank Gasparro.
