MECKLENBURG COUNTY SHERIFF MUG SHOTS. CUSTOM CUPS AND MUGS. CUSTOM IMPRINTED MUGS. Mecklenburg County Sheriff Mug Shots
Mecklenburg County Home Cemetery The Mecklenburg County Home was a place where indigent persons could live and be taken care of by the county. This cemetery was located near where the County Home formerly was. This cemetery is located accross the street (W. T. Harris Blvd.) from the University City Branch of the County Library, in the middle of a shopping center, and is directly next to a "Buffalo Wild Wings" restaurant. Burials occurred from 1930 to 1961. While I was taking photoigraphs of this cemetery, about every five minutes some shopper would walk by and inquire as to what it was. Everytime I told them this was the potters field for the country poor house, the incongruity of it being in the middle of a shopping center seemed to sadden them. GPS coordinates: N 35 degs, 18 mins., and 9.8 secs and W 80 degs, 44 mins, and 54.0 secs. Elevation 763 ft. Mecklenburg County Home or "Poor House" Cemetery
I stumbled upon this cemetery as I was going to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch. It's directly across the street from the University City Regional Library, 301 East W. T. Harris Blvd. Charlotte, NC. Some Googling uncovered that this cemetery was for the residents of the Mecklenburg County County Home, which was originally located nearby. Residents who could not provide for themselves became the responsibility of Mecklenburg Co. On 1-3-1939, a decision was made to place markers on the graves, using money from the Poor Fund Emergency Fund. Each marker was to be 8"wide, 2" thick, and from 1'8" to 1'10" high. The gravestones are all facing W. T. Harris Blvd. Because this cemetery was used before desegregation, there is a separation of graves. The earliest known burial was 1930. ©2007 Lesley Ann Miller Similar posts: best coffee k cups cowboy boot shot glass hamilton beach ensemble 12 cup coffee maker mug heater printed disposable coffee cups cup coffee house world cup coffee and tea |
