Bucket Elevator Restoration #5
Bucket Elevator Restoration #5
Another piece happily recovered in relatively good condition from Haxted Mill, the cloth belt for the elevator. the original belt was knackered but they had this used spare in good condition. I needed to mark it out with chalk and drill it to carry our buckets, some of which are restored and some made brand new to a similar design. Note the difference in design - the old buckets are hammered into shape from a single piece of metal using a former block. As a result they are very thin and quite light - but also prone to damage. The new buckets are made from three pieces welded together, much stronger but heavier, and dare I say it, not such an elegant solution. There will be 35 buckets in all. I've numbered the buckets because the old ones were drilled arbitrarily, meaning each needed its own matching holes drilled in the belt. I only realised this having used one new bucket to mark the belt for all the holes - none of the old buckets matched! Drilling the cloth is difficult - we fashioned this clamp out of two pices of scrap wood with guide holes drilled to get the spacing right and hold the cloth in place while it was drilled. Cloth belt can be bought new but is around ?15 per yard so it was fortunate we were offered this surplus length. It smells nice when you drill it though :-)

@ The Waterfront while waiting for a bucket of beer to be consumed, before I can closed the bar... I exaggerated the size of the beer mug just to mock my colleague and threatened him by showing this drawing to our boss.
