20080204 Panorama Estates, Tucson, 120 South Silverbell 120 South Silverbell This house was built in 1946 by Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Doebrich. The northern section was used as a machine shop with the southern section as a living area. Mr Doebrich made a fortune inventing an instrumetn to test the fiber strength of cotton in the field. For those long time Tucsonans, he also crafted the old mechanical scoreboard at the UA football stadium. Some of the unique features of this house are how it is heated and cooled. It is heated by radiant heat, which has the heating coils embedded in siz inches of concrete which sits on a base of steel plates supported by blocks. The cooling is evaporative. There is no duct work, but air is blown through the crawl space. Each room has vents into the crawl space and up ducts so that cool air moves effectively throughout the house. The door handles were milled Doebrich's machine shop. Probably the most curious feature is what is called the Dome Room. It originally had an electric organ, whose speakers were housed in the dome. It is surrounded by one inch tubes of orange and blue neon. We were told that Doebrich had an organist come up weekly to perform in the room. When the owners purchased the home in 1995, the two rooms on the north were still part of a functioning machine shop. The living section had fallen into disrepair with the passing of Mrs. Doebrich. After much hard work the owners really enjoy living in the house.
