POND HEATERS : CERAMIC ROOM HEATER : DAYTON BASEBOARD HEATER Pond Heaters
DIY Pond DeIcer 1 of 22 This is a 30 minute project. You'll need: Tools - a hacksaw, drill, utility knife, steak knife. Supplies - 3" of thin-wall (electrical pipe), a 2x3" section of pink insulation foam, four screws, a wire coat hanger, three tie-straps, clamp-light, and a baggie. Pipe lengths and Styrofoam sizes are approximate. I prefer making the foam larger - We get high winds and a large base prevents flipping. I created my floating deicer from scraps I had lying around the house. I had to purchase the foam, but picked up a damaged sheet for $5.00. Total project cost is under $50. Total power used – 100 watts, as opposed to 1200 watts for a retail heater!!! That’s about $30 a month in savings on your electric bill! Plus the DIY floating deicer lasts several years - I went through three retail ones in two years. This is a good group project as well for pond clubs. The foam comes in 4x8 foot sheets, so you can adjust the measurements and make six heaters from one sheet. You want a rectangle – it has more surface area and helps prevent flipping in high winds. Center the reflector. You don't have to be perfect. Whiskey Barrel Pond
This was a fun little project. The cats think I built it just for them - they drink from it and perch on the edge to watch the goldfish swim around. I got the whiskey barrel half from a local nursery, and found the brass "bird" faucet on eBay. There's a pump running into it so that a steady trickle of water dribbles from the faucet. My dad dug up the water lilly for me from one of his ponds back home in Texas, and my mom packaged it up and sent it to me. The aquarium heater kept it from freezing during the winter, which the cats (and probably the goldfish) appreciated.
