Non Magnetic Drill Collars

(DRILL COLLAR) Heavy tubular connector between drillpipe and drilling bit.

(Drill collar) The shaft collar is a simple, yet important, machine component found in many power transmission applications - most notably motors and gearboxes. The collars are used as mechanical stops, locating components, and bearing faces. The simple design lends itself to easy installation.

A heavy, thick-walled tube, usually steel, used between the drill pipe and the bit in the drill stem, used to stiffen the drilling assembly an put weight on the bit so that the bit can drill.

Drill Collar Stabilizer

During drilling operations, these drill collar stabilizers (Blue with spiral flutes) are set close to the drill bit as part of the bottom hole assembly (BHA). They provide for a rigid bottom section in the well bore to aid accurate control of the direction of drilling. The drilling operation relies on a huge array of specialist sections and fittings to aid accurate drilling, measurement while drilling, stiffness, flexibility etc. These units can be planned for or may be required adhoc, to overcome an unforeseen problem.

Collaring the hole

For those interested in the drilling process: When starting a hole they normally drill down 1 rod (6 meters), then they widen the first 3m of the hole to fit the PVC Collar which can be seen in this photo. The process of widening the hole means that meters 3-6 have to be re-drilled as rocks fall down the hole. This is what they are doing in this photo.
