Bull Run workshop, lathe
Bull Run workshop, lathe
Since Andrew asked (alright I admit I was going to post this next anyway) this is what I believe to be the left side of the lathe. It was the woven metal ring that initially caught my attention for this shot, but the lathe itself is quite impressive. I shot one roll of Tri-X while out at the power plant, and almost half (the past three out of ten total shots) were taken in this workshop. I had actually wandered through earlier in the day and had spied some of these shots, but I was finishing up a roll of color at the time and envisioned the shots in black and white. True, I know, I could have just shot in color and converted to black and white in post. I do that sometimes, but moreso than just the black and white look that I wanted, I wanted specifically the look that Tri-X would give these images, both with its tonality and with its grain, which is not as apparent on the computer screen as it is in prints.

Standing, looking out over the ocean is like listening to the world's oldest storyteller. Only these stories are told a bit differently than we are used to. I have to get up early (despite it being my day off) to go take pictures of a power plant that is being dismantled, so forgive me my brevity tonight. Have a good Friday all. PS. The "trick" to this shot is all in the exposure. It was actually a really bright moment, and those clouds were much much closer to being a brilliant white, but by metering off of the sun and therefore underexposing quite a bit I was able to get this deeper and darker image which emphasizes the play of light across the clouds and the bit of light on the horizon. Exposure is a simply a tool, albeit an incredibly valuable one. There is no such thing as a perfect exposure, like every other bit of photography, it is only what you want it to be.
