San Borjitas
San Borjitas
On the first Saturday in April, my lady love and I were up for another adventure after working in the morning. We had been meaning to check out some "real" cave paintings, something a little more exciting than the odd geometric graphics found in el Tabor canyon or on the way up to Las Parras. Without any prior planning whatsoever, on the spur of the moment we set out at 12:30 for Mulege, having heard about a really cool cave west of there. Although it seemed a bit ridiculous at the time to start out on an expedition so late in the day, we thought what the heck - go for it. Our first stop, naturally enough, was at the white beaches of Bahia de Concepcion, for a refreshing swim.Nothing like a cool dip part way through a road trip to relax from all those "curvas peligrosas". Our second stop was to see if our favorite cafe on the main square of Mulege was open. Sadly, it has gone out of business. We recalled with fondness drinking wine and eating wonderful Thai (!) food in front of a crackling mesquite fire here on a cold afternoon last winter. Back on the highway, we drove north for a short while and turned west at Palos Verdes. At this point, I should hasten to advise that a sturdy high clearance vehicle with serious suspension would be the vehicle of choice for this journey. The road threads its way west loosly around an arroyo on a fairly rough road. The beauty here is breath-taking, with a lot of visual variety and interest. We drove faster than was prudent, completing the main leg in an hour and a half. It could be done comfortably in a couple of hours. We stopped at the main ranch at the end of the road to connect with the guide. Normal procedure is to stop at the INAH office in Mulege and buy permits ahead of time, something we didn't bother to do. No problemo - Rosario levied the 100 peso per person permit fee plus 100 peso guide fee, climbed into our truck and directed us to a gated road not far from the ranch house. He has the key. Another 20 minute drive dodging cows brought us to a small parking area (actually a cattle watering hole), from which we began our hike. It's only about a 15 minute hike, taking us into a beautiful rift valley with a wall of stone on the opposite side. The trail climbs up to a prominent ledge, and there the cave looms. The setting is perfect for a winter emcampment. We arrived around 4:30, and the westerly sun was angled perfectly into the mouth of the cave, providing a sizeable band of nomads comfortable safety. Out timing could not have been better. I'll post a few photos to give you an idea of the extent of cave paintings - let it suffice to say we immediately realized that the trek was worth it! One cannot help but fall into a profound reverie, imagining past occupants and their trials and tribulations, trying to divine meaning from the provocative images, and marvelling at the mysterious remoteness and magic of the setting. We stayed for as long as it took Rosario to have two luxurious, leisurely smokes, him watching us bemusedly acting out what tourists always do - taking zillions of photos, posing and imitating the images, expressing awe, trying to interpret what we see, and generally having an exhilarating experience. Ho hum, Rosario was probably thinking to himself, for the umpteenth time... After dropping Rosario off, we bounced back to the highway before dark, rolled into Loreto not long after Taqueria Travolta opened, stuffed ourselves with wonderful tacos carne asada, and were back in Loreto Bay by 9:00. What a fantastic day!!!
