TNP Big Walk
TNP Big Walk
MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate release The New Paper BIG WALK returns… “on water” - Presented by NTUC FairPrice - Supported by Suntec City Mall, PUB Singapore, 25 September 2008 - A novel mass walk will take place from Suntec City Mall on Sunday, 2 November 2008. Tens of thousands of Singaporeans will walk from the new ‘hottest’ spot (heart of the F1 race) to the new ‘coolest’ spot – the recently completed Marina Barrage. Participants will be among the first to visit the magnificent Barrage and reservoir at Marina Bay. This is set to become a jewel of Singapore, with Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Sands soon to be completed. To kick off this new chapter for Singapore, The New Paper and presenter NTUC FairPrice are bringing back the Big Walk – together with partners PUB, the national water agency and Suntec City Mall. The event ‘Big Walk on Water’, which also marks the 20th anniversary of The New Paper, will give readers and shoppers a chance to ‘walk on water’ by crossing the dam across the Marina Channel. The views there are breathtaking – the fresh water bay, the cityscape, Esplanade, iconic hotels, Singapore Flyer, golf course, and the world-class Marina Barrage. The mass-participation fun walk will allow Singaporeans to relive the heyday of the TNP Big Walk (which once entered the Guinness Book of Records). The signature event, which started in 1991, was suspended after the plan to demolish the National Stadium, which served as the longtime base of the TNP Big Walk. But on 2 November 2008, as part of The New Paper’s 20th anniversary celebrations, 20,000 people will be invited to take part in this special Big Walk. But unlike the practice of previous years when participants were required to pay $4 each, registration for the Big Walk this year will be free. There is also no competitive element in this year’s Big Walk. Suntec City Mall will roll out the welcome mats for Big Walkers as they gather at the Fountain of Wealth. Participants will then be flagged off for their 5km walk to the Marina Barrage in Marina South. There, participants can finish the walk by enjoying a picnic by the bay. Big Walkers will receive a special goodie bag from Presenting Sponsor NTUC FairPrice. Walkers can also visit the exhibits at the $226-million development. The pride of PUB offers a giant green rooftop garden, and an indoor exhibition on Singapore’s water resources to visit. After the morning activities at the Barrage, registered participants will be given a free bus ride back to Suntec City Mall where a post-walk shoppers’ party & carnival and a second goodie bag with vouchers, towels, drinks and other freebies will await them. Editor of The New Paper, Ivan Fernandez, said: “The Big Walk is close to our hearts and we wanted to bring it back on our 20th anniversary. Serendipitously, the Barrage was completed this year. So like the waters in the Marina Channel, this was a good confluence for us.” “NTUC FairPrice, Suntec City Mall, PUB and The New Paper all recognised that a visit to the Marina Barrage would not just help Singaporeans fall in love with this new jewel but it would also bring our readers together for a Sunday picnic and a post-walk party at the mall later.” To make the Big Walk easily accessible to the public, FairPrice will be using its wide network of stores to help Singaporeans register for the event. FairPrice Group CEO Tan Kian Chew said: “Sports and sporting events are a good way to bring families and the community together. FairPrice is proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s New Paper Big Walk. We believe this national event will be a wonderful occasion for families to come together for a memorable outing blessed by fresh air, blue sky and clear water.” Mr Yap Kheng Guan, PUB’s Director (3P Network), said: “What we have here at Marina Barrage is really a unique engineering showpiece that will offer three benefits – boost Singapore’s water supply, alleviate flooding in the low-lying areas in the city and transform the reservoir into a lifestyle attraction.” “With Singapore’s new downtown taking shape around the bay, the consistent water level at the Marina Reservoir will make it an ideal venue for water activities. The Marina Barrage will bring many exciting possibilities and we hope it will excite the nation. We want more people to work with PUB to make it a lifestyle destination and more importantly, a Singapore icon.” To register, each participant has to produce a cut-out of The New Paper’s new logo. So if a family of five wants to take part, they have to collect five logos of The New Paper during the week and produce them at the registration booth. Registration for The New Paper Big Walk on Water will start in early October at selected NTUC FairPrice outlets and at the Suntec City Mall, Galleria Dome. More details on the dates and venues for registration will be announced later. For more information, click on tnp.sg.
