We finally selected our packs for the trip. We narrowed it down to the travel backpacks rather than the camping backpacks primarily because the travel backpacks were dimensioned to fit in the overhead compartment of planes. The convenience and security of being able to keep bags with us as opposed to checking them is important to us. First, we picked out all the items we wanted to pack; put all the stuff for each person in a garbage bag and set off to the stores. We went to EMS and REI. There we tried to fit our garbage bag into different packs. We found two very good packs -- the EMS Adventure Pack and the REI Tourer Pack -- that would fit our stuff. We bought both bags to try at home before returning one of them. We liked features of both bags. The REI bag was smaller (truer to the carry on requirements of 45 linear inches) and the space was more usable and easier to pack. The REI pack also had a better day pack. The EMS bag had better suspension/padding and as a result was much more comfortable. The EMS pack also had a very cool built in full cover that we can use in rain, for security in dorms, and if we ever have to check the bag on a bus. We packed both bags and hiked around the neighborhood. In the end we selected the EMS bag because it was more comfortable. We are going to be lugging these beauties around for 2.5 months so we want to be as comfortable as possible.
