Bed Linen Wholesale - Leopard Napkins - Rose Placemats. Bed Linen Wholesale
Lebanese shop (E. Nicol & Son) in Pendembu, 1967 This was Pendembu's largest and oldest Lebanese shop, founded in 1916. Its business sign read: "E. Nicol & Son, General Merchant, Pendembu, Dealers in Provision, Hardware, Fancies, Retail and [sic] Holsales." It was across the street from the Mobil petrol station. The shop had a huge inventory of bolts of cloth, ready-made clothing, shoes and rubber boots, bed linens and blankets, mosquito netting, cooking and dining wares, buckets and other hardware, torches (flashlights) and batteries, kerosene lamps, portable radios, tape recorders (battery), record players (battery), bagged cement, corrugated metal roofing, tinned provisions (Kraft cheese, olives, corned beef, tomato puree, and the like), bagged sugar and salt, liquor and wine, tobacco, and patent medicines. These items were all retailed to the general public, but the cloth, clothing, and most of the smaller items were sold mainly in wholesale lots to peddlars and other small-scale merchants. Additionally, the shop dealt in small motorcycles (such as the one on the verandah, far right), and it was also a major bulker of agricultural produce (coffee, cocoa, palm kernels). When the firm's founder, Elias Nicol, died at age 79 in late 1967, Lebanese shopkeepers for a radius of 65 miles closed their shops in respect. The District Commissioner, Asst. D. C., District Court Clerk, and District Council Treasurer all came to the Nicol home (from Kailahun) and stayed for the funeral. Locally, the Paramount Chief sent her Speaker Chief, and the oldest (mid-90s) and most prestigious Section Chief also came to express sorrow. Although the Nicols were Catholics, the Imam of the Pendembu Mosque visited their home that day. In the evening, despite a heavy rain, 15 motorcars of mourners followed the coffin to the cemetery.
