Hand Fire Drill
fire drill

More Firing Drills...
The Crew needs to fire 3 shells in less than 3 seconds. They are brass, heavy and will have a blank round inserted into the hole in the middle (so they actually go bang when the breech is closed). This is one of the two places where people regularly lose their fingers. The guy on the left has to hook the fired shell out with the "extractor" while the Firing Number (on the right) is putting the next shell in and then slamming the breech shut. As you can see there isn't a lot of room and plenty of opportunity to get it wrong. But this year the boys didn't lose any fingers (a bit of bad bruising and some blood blisters - but that is par for the course).
Fire Drill
As part of relinquishing my duties at the University I ceremonially handed over my beloved (and if you believe that you'll believe anything) fire warden's jacket to Stuart on Tuesday. I was happy in the knowledge that he'd have to deal with a fire drill today. Of course I didn't warn him. At least it wasn't raining. 06 November 2008 | 22
