Nuremberg, Germany
Nuremberg, Germany
Nuremberg architectural detail. Old Nuremberg was pretty much flattened by Allied bombers in WWII due to its close symbolic association with the Nazi party and its guiding ideals. (That's not a selling point anymore.) The area has been rebuilt in the style of the original buildings so it still looks medievel. Nuremberg now trades on its medievel charm and its annual Kristkindlemarkt, an outdoor riot of locally-made Christmas kitsch, beer steins, and gingerbread (for which Nuremberg claims to be famous). Oh, and Gluhwein, a nasty concoction of hot red wine, sugar and spices. By careful experimentation I found that it's not so nasty after you choke down the first few mugs. Bringing up massive Nazi party rallies and vile anti-Semitic legislation is considered bad form here today, mein freund. (That's yesterday's Nuremberg.) But if you're interested, the abandoned Zeppelintribune and refurbished Ehrenhalle - both key locations in annual Nazi Party theatrics -- are still there.
