An up-close and personal view of New Mexico's highest mountain, taken from milepost 23 along NM-38, seven miles north of Eagle Nest. UNLIKE Bobcat Pass, Red River Pass, NM-578 (upper Red River), Eagle Nest or Valle Vidal, the ACTUAL SUMMIT of Wheeler Peak CAN be seen from a three and a half mile stretch of NM-38 (circa mileposts 21-24), around the old ghost village of Elizabethtown.

Whether or not you consider Mount Walter as a significant summit, it blocks the actual summit of Wheeler Peak, when viewing from Bobcat Pass, Red River Pass, NM-578 (upper Red River) or Valle Vidal.
