Exercise C for Essay Two

Overview
Your job in Exercise C is to pose questions about the four texts texts you've read in the Chapter on "Schooling": Rodriguez, Lu, Jordan, and Anzaldua. These writers explore differences between the cultures and languages of home and school. What are they telling us about those tensions? How does their
experience in moving from home to school compare with yours? What questions do these texts raise in your mind?

For example, in reading these texts, I might wonder, "If my home language is different from school language, what is gained and what is lost as I assimilate the new language?" Or, "Are some speakers of other languages and dialects disadvantaged by their teachers' attitudes toward their language?" Or, "Is bilingual education an effective approach to teaching students whose first language is not English?"

Those are a few of my questions. What are yours?

After reviewing your highlighting, annotation, and exploratory writing, write about a page in which you brainstorm a series of questions about the issues raised in these readings. You'll choose one of these questions to respond to in Essay Two.
