Editing Strategies

As you move to the last stage of your process--editing--use these strategies and resources to find and fix rough spots in your writing.

Use editing resources:
          • Dictionary: Use for definitions and spelling.
          • Spelling checker: Use with dictionary, not instead of.
          • Easy Writer: Use brief menu (inside front cover) or contents pages (inside back cover) to find information on the specific editing issues you're dealing with.
          • Tutors at Reading, Writing, and Study Strategies Center: They won't fix your paper, but they'll give you good coaching help.
  • Use a printed-out copy for editing.
  • Read your writing aloud to yourself.
  • Use the "bottom up" technique. Read your writing starting at the end, working your way back to the beginning sentence by sentence. This slows you down by breaking the logical flow of thought, causing you to focus more closely on each sentence.
  • Look for your "favorite errors," the ones you know you make most often. Do a special proofreading looking for those errors.
