American Embroidered Linen Shirt, ca. 1900 Natural Linen Skirt, ca. 1900 The combination of a blouse and skirt was an important type of attire that was derived from the fashionable tailored suit. The American artist Charles Dana Gibson (1867–1944) drew charming and attractive illustrations of young ladies engaged in sports, wearing plain skirts with starched blouses. Compared with the rather opulent and restrictive fashions worn by mature women, the dress of the modern, active “Gibson Girl” created an impression of natural freshness.
