This Saturday May 30, 2009 the Thousand Stars Foundation is organizing two events to celebrate the month of Vesak:

(1) Monthly Pandara Seminar on Mahayana Buddhism. 10 am - 12 noon.

The topic for this Saturday is "Three Visions in Mahayana Buddhism" by Dr. Soraj Hongladarom.

(2) White Tara Practice. 1-2.30 pm.

White Tara is a bodhisattva of compassion. The practice leads to long life and healing blessings. We will emphasize on meditation and mantra recitation for this session.

Medium of instruction: Thai. English summaries will be provided in case there are non-Thai speakers.

หลังจากมูลนิธิพันดาราได้เปิดอบรมวิชาภาษาทิเบตพื้นฐาน 1 ในปี 2551 เพื่อให้ผู้เข้ารับการอบรมได้ศึกษาภาษาทิเบตเพิ่มเติม มูลนิธิจึงจะเปิดอบรมวิชาภาษาทิเบตพื้นฐาน 2 เพื่อให้ความรู้เกี่ยวกับภาษาทิเบต ความรู้ด้านวัฒนธรรมและศาสนาของทิเบต และ เพื่อให้ผู้เรียนได้นำความรู้ไปใช้ในการศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนา การค้นคว้าด้านภาษาและวัฒนธรรมของเอเซีย หรือการเดินทางท่องเที่ยวในทิเบต

Himalayan Fair and Special Exhibition of The Shanti Tara Maha Stupa

Saturday, 12 July, 2008, 4:00-6:00pm

The Thousand Stars Foundation cordially invites you to attend a special viewing of the architectural model of the Shanti Tara Maha Stupa, the first Tibetan-style great stupa to be built in Hua-Hin. A short film on the project will also be introduced.

The accompanying Himalayan Fair features beautiful things from the Himalayas offered at reasonable prices. All proceeds from the Fair go to the Maha Stupa Project.

The Exhibition and Fair will be held at the publication office of Serindia Publications, 9/5 Soi Ari Samphan 5, Phaholyothin Road, Bangkok.

Our Foundation is a non-profit organization that conducts research on Tibet and the Himalayas, nurtures art and architecture, spiritual practice, and environmental care. Basic Dance Workshop I: Sacred Newar Tantric Dance for Mindfulness and Inner Awakening

The Thousand Stars Foundation is proud to offer a course on Sacred Newar Tantric Dance by Mr. Thanapol Virulhakul (Khru Tam). The dance is called "Charya Nritya" and is part of a long tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism in Nepal. The dance is not mere entertainment, but a "spiritual entertainment" where the dance itself is a Dharma practice. This is a way to inculcate mindfulness and awakening which are necessary for eventual attainment of Liberation.

 

The workshop is conducted by Thanapol Virulhakul, a rare Thai dance artist who has travelled to Nepal for spiritual transformation through the art form. The workshop is jointly organized by the Thousand Stars Foundation and the Open Space for Art and Culture.

 

May 28 - June 28, 2008

Course on Beginning Tibetan Language 

The Thousand Stars Foundation will be offering a beginning course on Tibetan language from May 28 to June 28, 2008 at the Foundation House, 695 Ladprao 11, Bangkok 10330. We can accept only 20 students. The course is offered every Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and on Sunday from 4 to 6 pm. If these days fall under the Guru or Dakini days we will have a prayer session for an hour before starting the lesson.

Instructors: Aj. Yontan (Meu Yontan Tongdrol) and Dr. Krisadawan Hongladarom

 

Affiliation: The Thousand Stars Foundation

 

Languages of instruction: Tibetan and Thai

 

Duration and Time: 30 hours, three times a week: Wednesdays, Fridays 18.30-20.30 hrs. Sundays 16.00-18.00 hrs.

 

Registration fees: 4,500 baht (All the proceeds will be contributed to the Tara Great Stupa project).

This course emphasizes the relationship between language and culture and aims to equip the students with basic skills, namely speaking, listening, reading, writing including translating. We'll read a basic prayer in Tibetan as well.

For those who are interested only in reading and translating Buddhist texts, we hope to offer such a course in the near future.

Synopsis of the topic:
The female Buddhist deity of compassion Tara has been an object of devotion and a living practice among practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism in Tibet and beyond.
Her ten-syllable mantra is always on the lips of her devotees, no matter whether they are male or female, educated or uneducated. Her energy is evoked, particularly in this age when human beings are experiencing warfare, illnesses, natural disasters, conflicts and mental disturbances. The practice has grown so much that there are now a large number of Retreat centers around the world devoted to her.
Who is Tara? Is she an external reality or an abstract projection of our own mind? How can we understand Tara from the relative and absolute points of view? How can her practice clear away fears and negative emotions, prepare the practitioner’s mind for death, and lead towards ultimate realization? The talk will be devoted to providing answers to these questions from the perspective of a lay female practitioner of Vajrayana Buddhism within the Theravada context.

Experiencing the Sacred: Buddhist Art in Bhutan

The Thousand Stars Foundation, in collaboration with Serindia Publications is pleased to invite the general public to attend a special talk on "Experiencing the Sacred: Buddhist Art in Bhutan" on Sunday May 11, 2008, 1.30-4 pm at the Foundation House, 695 Ladprao Soi 11, Ladprao Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok.

This talk explores how Buddhist art and images are experienced in Bhutan from the perspective of the Buddhist faithful. From the ornate temples of the great fortresses (dzongs) to modest home altars, Buddhist images play an important role in the daily life of the Buddhist community. The spiritual connection between the practitioner and sacred images will be explored using specific examples drawn from the speaker's observations in Bhutan.

About the Speaker
John Johnston is assistant curator for the exhibition "The Dragon's Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan" organized by the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Mr. Johnston was a key participant in locating and identifying works of sacred art for the exhibition and was based in Bhutan for three years working on the project. He also participated in original research, writing, and editing efforts culminating in the catalogue The Dragon's Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan (Serindia Publications, 2008). He is cofounder and coeditor of Buddhist Art News and author of numerous articles on the subject. Mr. Johnston presently serves on the editorial board of the National Museum of Bhutan. He has conducted fieldwork at remote Buddhist sites throughout Asia, particularly in silk road and Himalayan areas.

The Tibetans inspire us to love not only our human fellows but tiny beings as insects and those from other realms. Their wisdom leads us to the domain of death which is in fact the domain of living. What do we learn from Tibetan spirituality and how can we apply it to everyday life, particularly when we need to look after patients? What should be our view toward cancer? How can patients deal with it so that their mind is liberated from fear and all sorts of mental suffering?

The Thousand Stars Foundation, the Center for Ethics of Science and Technology and the Department of Philosophy, Chulalongkorn University cordially invite the members of the public to a talk on "Learning to Philosophize the 'Tibetan' Way" by Georges Dreyfus from Williams College, USA from 10 am to 12 noon at Room 708, Boromratchakumari Bldg., Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.

Georges Dreyfus is a professor of religious studies at Williams College in Massachusetts, USA. He has a Ph.D. from Harvard and a Geshe Lharampa Degree, which is the highest monastic educational degree in Tibetan Buddhism. He is the author of many books such as "The Svatantrika-Prasangika Distinction," a book on Dharmakirti's philosophy and many others. The talk today will focus on how philosophy is done in a Tibetan monastery. This consists in the famous debates among the monks on finer points of the Buddhist teaching. The talk will focus on the anatomy of these debates and on how we could understand Buddhism better as a result.

 The next talk in the Thousand Stars Series will again feature Aj. Soraj Hongladarom on Shantideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Bodhicaryavatara). Now the talk will focus on Chapter 8 on Meditation.

The talk will be in Thai and starts at 1:30 pm on Sunday, February 24, 2008 and ends around 3:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. There is no registration fees. The venue is the Thousand Stars House at 695, Soi 11, Ladprao Road near Carrefour Ladprao.

The next Thousand Stars Lecture Series will feature Dr. Andy Lowe who will speak to us about his recent trip to the Kailash Mountain in western Tibet. Mount Kailash, known in Tibetan as "Kang Rinpoche," or the Precious Snow Mountain, is one of the most spiritually potent places in the world, and is the source of three of Asia's greatest rivers--the Indus, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. Andy will also talk with us about how to prepare for a trip to the mountain and how to manage the effects of trekking in high altitude.

The talk will take place on Sunday, 3 February 2008 from 13:30 to 15:30 hours at the Thousand Stars House, 695, Soi 11, Ladprao Road, near Carrefour Ladprao.

Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the Tara Great Stupa

The public is cordially invited to attend the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the Tara Great Stupa at Tara Khadiravana, Nong Phlub, Hua Hin, Prachuab Khirikhan on January 10, 2008 at 11:09 am. The ceremony will be performed by His Eminence Lhasray Rinpoche. For more detail please click this brochure (both Thai and English). The ceremony will be followed by a two-and-a-half day Guru Rinpoche Retreat and Empower (see below).

For those who want to attend the Great Stupa ceremony on January 10 and have no transportation, please contact Worawanna Petchkij at worawora@gmail.com, Tel. 086-7228129 by the 5th. The Foundation will help arrange transportation by an air-conditioned van. A round trip costs 400 baht. The van will pick up participants at the Foundation House on January 10 at 6.00 AM. and leave Khadiravana for Bangkok at 2.30 PM.

 For those who want to attend the Guru Rinpoche Retreat and leave on January 12, the Foundation will take you to the Hua-Hin market. From there you can get a public van to the Victory Monument. It costs 180 baht.

Everyone is welcome to have lunch with Rinpoche after the ceremony on the 10th.

Please bring a sleeping bag if you join the retreat. The Foundation will take care of camping facilities. Participants are also welcome to join the retreat only during the daytime. There are many guesthouses and hotels in downtown Hua-Hin for a reasonable price.

Guru Rinpoche Retreat and Empowerment

The 1000 Stars Foundation is holding a three-day Guru Rinpoche retreat on January 10-12, 2008 at the Tara Khadiravana Retreat Center. The retreat will start in the afternoon of January 10 (after the stupa foundation stone laying ceremony) and will be concluded by the Guru Rinpoche empowerment in the late morning of January 12. His Eminence Kundrol Mongyal Lhasray Rinpoche will lead the retreat and conduct the empowerment. Sang-ngag Lingpa Rinpoche (Lhasray Rinpoche's son who is a tulku of a great terton or treasure revealer) will also preside in the ceremony and join us in the retreat and empowerment.

Lhasray Rinpoche is a senior Dzogchen master from the New Bon Tradition. His family inherited directly from the lineage of Buddha Tempa Sherab. His late father Hungchen Drotu Lingpa and older sister Khabcho Wangmo were one of the greatest tertons Tibet has known. Lhasray Rinpoche is also a great master in the Nyingma lineage. His life story is a noble one full of wisdom, compassion, patience, diligence and faith in Buddhism. Although he was imprisoned for 21 years, he turned his prison cell into a meditation place and he developed no hatred or any negative thought towards those who made him suffer.

Registration fees for the three-day retreat: 1,500 baht; for the empowerment only: 600 baht.
There is no registration fee for those who wish to attend the foundation stone laying ceremony only.

The fees will contribute to the round-trip airfares of the two Rinpoches between Chengdu and Bangkok and will cover Rinpoches' and retreatants' meals, camping gear and other necessary expenses.

One-Day White Tara Retreat (Sunday, November 4, 2007)

Practitioners are invited to join our prayer and meditation on White Tara at Khadiravana, the Foundation’s Retreat Center on Sunday November 4, 2007, at 9.30 am - 4 pm. The retreat is led by Dr. Krisadawan Hongladarom. The teachings will be in both Thai and English.

Tara is an aspect of Avalokiteshvara, or better known in Thailand as “Kuan Yin.” She is female Buddha of compassion. The most common forms of Tara are White Tara and Green Tara. A practice on White Tara or “Wish-fulfilling Wheel” brings prosperity,  recovery from illness, and long life.
