Has one ever been uncertain or certain on different about the decision that are made? Well as Barry believes certainty creates strength as for uncertainty creates weakness. He also believes that one that shows uncertainty produces a fearful energy, as one may not be able to over come significant obstacles. As for scientist and making decisions on research. As for one to become a scientist it does not only require intelligence,it requires curiosity passion, patience and creativity. In The Great influenza by Barry he uses rhetorical strategies such as specific examples, allusions and repetition to characterize scientific research.
Barry uses specific example to characterize what he believes is scientific research. He believes that a scientist beliefs can or may change due to one of his or hers findings during laboratory studies. As for Barry explains that Einstein did not  believe in his very own theories until they were tested. Which is reasonable as one should not believe in something until it proven to be true or false. This should be expressed throughout all scientists beliefs as theories should be tested. Another example is how all scientist exist on the frontier and how scientist study into the abyss of the unknown to make new discoveries. Barry uses these specific examples as he is certain that these are what ideal scientist go through. He characterizes scientific research as scientist must be careful in their study as wrong steps may send them back in their study instead of forward or may even create some type of chaos within their study.

Barry also uses allusions to characterize scientific research as he relates to Einstein. As for Einstein had some of the greatest discoveries he does not relate to many at all but he does relate to Einstein and his theories as they should be tested before one believes in them. Barry also uses repetition as he stresses on the different ways scientist go about their study. Such as procedures and protocols. On how every step one may take reflects on future steps such as getting information on what a rock might hold. One may not always take dynamite to rock as one might destroy what the have long to look for. During experiments scientists must know when and where to look as Barry stresses that experiments do not always go as planned regardless of the design or preparation, such as one may have good days and bad days, as successful and ultimately failure with certain experiments and test.

Overall Barry uses different rhetorical devices in order to express his view on the different characteristics of scientific research. There are ultimately many different way scientist may go about there research and there is no right or wrong way as long as one may prove your theories then should be useful.
