Welcome

Be the change you wish to see in the world - Mahatma Gandhi

Hi, I'm Mrs. Honeysett! I have been teaching for over 20 years. I earned my bachelor’s degree from WMU in art, and then started as a guest teaching artist with the Kalamazoo Institute of Art and Education for the Arts. It was working with the KIA and EFA that I discovered my love of teaching, so I went back to school and got my Master’s Degree in Secondary Education. I worked for the Parchment School District for over 10 years, and have been at Portage Central for 8 years. I am passionate about seeing young people gain knowledge and confidence in themselves as they explore art and design.

I try to make connections with all of my students so that the classroom environment is one where students feel they can make mistakes safely, as it is through mistakes that we learn the most. I also feel it is important for young people to have their own voice, particularly in the work they create, so I encourage student choice and student voice in my classroom. This sense of autonomy is what I believe helps students be able to grow as individuals.
