REU Site at NJIT Institute for Space Weather Sciences

Overview
The Institute for Space Weather Sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology will host a Research Experience for Undergraduates in the summer of 2022, funded by the National Science Foundation. Eight undergraduate students will be invited to Newark, New Jersey for 10 weeks to engage in cutting-edge solar physics, terrestrial physics, space weather, and big data research with space physicists, astronomers, and computer scientists from the Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research, Center for Computational Heliophysics, and Center for Big Data.
Students in this program will be paired with mentors specializing in various research areas. At the end of the 10-week program, participants will be required to present their research experience at the NJIT URI Summer Research Symposium. Partial funding will be provided to attend the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, the American Astronomical Society Meeting, or a conference closely related to their research area depending on the students' achievement in their research activity. Pending funding availability, some eligible students may have an opportunity to visit our world-class solar observing facilities such as Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) or Extended Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA), both of which are located in California.
The time of the program is May 22 to July 28, 2023. Students must be available for the entire 10 weeks in order to participate in the program. Office space (cubicles) will be provided for each participating student. ISWS offers loaner laptops (at no expense), but students are welcome to bring their own laptops.
Students will be provided a total stipend of $6,000 for the 10-week program. Additionally, a travel (between home and NJIT) and $140/week of meal allowance is provided to each student. Housing on the NJIT campus (shared rooms) will be provided.
Eligibility
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
US citizens or green card holders.
Full-time undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) fields at the time of the application. Rising sophomores are also encouraged to apply.
Having a GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale).
Committed to working 40 hours per week on campus during the REU period.
Applicants from four-year universities and community colleges are both welcomed. Students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
