Emotional Intelligence Workshops

Exploring Emotional Intelligence: Key Factors for Inclusive Excellence

DETAILS

Through our partnership with the Inclusive Graduate Education Network, an NSF INCLUDES Alliance, we are holding a five-part workshop series that focuses on the development of social-emotional competencies that are essential for success in graduate education and future career performance.

Decades of research show that emotional intelligence (EI) competencies demonstrate strong relationships to important academic and workplace outcomes.  Research also shows that EI competencies are not dependent on race, gender, or culture of origin and that anyone can improve their EI with learning and coaching. These workshops will provide an overview of EI, with a focus on the four fundamental clusters of EI: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management.  Participants will gain EI skills to help them be resilient and successful in graduate school and beyond.

These workshops will be facilitated by Dr. Joann Farrell Quinn, Ph.D., MBA. Dr. Quinn is the Director of SELECT Competency Assessment at the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine, an associate professor at the University of South Florida in the Morsani College of Medicine and Muma College of Business, and the Academic Director of the Tampa General Hospital (TGE)-USF People Development Institute.

Early-career scientists, such as undergraduate, graduate students, and post-docs, are encouraged to register. Faculty and staff affiliated with IGEN are also welcome to attend. You can register for one or all sessions.  Each session can be taken on its own or in conjunction with the others.  However, the material will build during the series.

A recording of the introductory session is available below. Although it is not mandatory, this will provide an overview of the content areas that will be covered in the sessions that follow.

Quinn Miller Competency Assessment (QMCA)

This assessment will ask how you understand yourself and work with others. To ensure validity, you will only receive results once at least 5 other people have completed the assessment on your behalf, you will be given instructions upon completing the assessment.

The assessment takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. If you have questions you may contact IPHub@igenetwork.org

Past Sessions

Introductory Session: What is emotional intelligence?

Dr. Quinn discusses the concept of Emotional Intelligence and shares how emotional and social competencies are the essence of what makes us effective-- both personally and professionally. Dr. Quinn reveals the WHAT, WHY, and HOW of these competencies, which can be developed to increase understanding of ourselves, improve decision-making, improve focus, and reduce the impact of stressors upon our work, relationships, and happiness.

Self-Awareness Session

Studies show that most people think they are self-aware, but research shows otherwise. Self-awareness is the foundation of our success, yet few focus on creating true awareness.  In this session, we explored how increasing self-awareness leads to the ability to manage ourselves and focus on success.

Self-Management Session

Self-management skills are essential for emotional regulation—needed for adaptability, reliability, stress management, and productivity. In this session, we will explore how to move from self-awareness to self-management, and how you can improve your own self-management starting with just a few minutes a day.

Social Awareness Session

Understanding the environment around us is essential to navigate the workplace.  Social awareness allows us to understand others and empathize, ultimately providing us with the ability to connect and create stronger relationships for greater team and organizational success. In this session, we will explore the what, why, and how of social awareness.

Relationship Management Session

We all need to build relationships with others.  This session focuses on how integrating the competencies of self-awareness, self-management and social awareness build and sustains effective relationships. In this session, we will integrate all of the emotional and social competencies and discuss how to communicate more effectively, better manage conflict, and collaborate for success.
