Parents: Please use this site to keep up with what your students are doing in Freshman Focus each week. Have conversations with them to ensure they are making the most of their time in there!

Expectations and Happenings in Freshman Focus Classes:

Science Mondays, Math Wednesdays, English Fridays:

    • Students will be focused on science, math, and English each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, respectfully, in freshman focus.
    • Assignments will be given that either preview or review content from these class.
    • Grades will be assigned for many of these assignments, so please make sure you are completing them and turning them in.
    • All assignments assigned are chosen for a reason. They should not be viewed as busy work.

Talk About It Tuesdays and Thursdays:

    • Freshman Focus teachers will conference with 4-5 students each Tuesday about their grades, attendance, behavior, etc.
    • Teachers will fill out a form to keep track of improvements made throughout the school year.
    • Students should be open and honest with themselves and their teacher as they conference. The FF teacher is there to be a coach and guide them back on track if they wander off some in any area.
    • FF teachers will cycle through 4-5 kids each Tuesday until they have gone through their entire roster. At that point, they will start the process over again and start re-conferencing with the students again to watch for gains, struggles, updates, etc.

Tuesdays and Thursdays (continued):

    • While teachers are conferencing with students one at a time, the other students are responsible for working independently and quietly on one or more of the following:
      • Weekly choice board assignments
      • Homework for other courses
      • Missing work for other courses
      • Content review assignments for the week
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays are not for free time. No students should be using this time to sit and work on nothing. Teachers will be monitoring the work done during this time and communicating directly with the 9th grade science, math, and English teachers to ensure work is being completed that is either current or missing. There is always something to be done (even if this is just studying current material).
    • Students may also use this time to visit the Makerspace...more to come on this!

Math Retakes:

    • Students can retake any assessments during FF as long as they get prior approval from their math teacher and coordinate with Mr. Jackson or Ms. Herrington for available days to come during FF so that they can get the retakes ready. Students will not be allowed to complete a retake unless they have completed the necessary requirements for remediation prior.
    • This eliminates the excuse of not being able to come early or stay late after school do do such. No more excuses!

Course Remediation Rotations:

    • We will be pulling groups of students throughout the school year to help provide remediation and support for math and science courses. If students are pulled to come into one of these sessions, they are expected to show up and put full effort in to get the help they need. They should not be skipping out on these sessions to stay in their FF classes on these given days. Students will be afforded the opportunity to work on unit recovery during this time.

Weekly Choice Boards:

    • Students will be provided with a new choice board (or some variation of a choice board) at least every two weeks.
    • Choice boards will be developed to hit topics that all FF students can benefit from. For example:
      • Content related choice boards (math, science, and English)
      • Study skills choice boards (how to study, how to create study tools online, etc.)
      • Literacy related choice boards (vocabulary, reading comprehension, close reading, etc.)
    • Students will be required to complete these assignments as their teacher assigns them, but they can also view the assignments on their own on this site under "Choice Boards"
    • Grades will be assigned for various choice board activities each week.
    • Each choice board and it's related activities should take no more than about 3 days to complete. This will allow for time to study and do homework for other classes in the other 2 days.

Grading:

    • Students will be receiving AT LEAST three grades per week that will be posted in Infinite Campus.
      • Teachers have the discretion to grade/post more than three per week.
    • Parents and students should check IC frequently to make sure grades are being completed and that the overall grade in FF is not dropping due to lack of work.
