The Luther W. Machen Elementary School opened its doors in 1970. Located on Sacramento Drive, it is named in memory of an educator and administrator whose career began in 1922 as a shop teacher in the old Hampton High School. Mr. Machen developed the Teaching Materials Bureau, and was an active supporter from the inception of the educational and cultural television station WHRO-TV. In 1959, at the beginning of Hampton's boom in school construction, Mr. Machen became supervisor of construction, overseeing the building of more than ten structures, beginning with Hampton High School in 1958, and concluding with Paul H. Burbank Elementary School in 1967.
