Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is a School Counselor?

Elementary school counselors serve in many ways: by being an advocate and leader for students, helping students develop in academic, personal/social, and career domains, and providing various types of interactions including individual counseling, small group counseling, and classroom guidance.

2. Why would a student see the School Counselor?

A school counselor serves students in several areas including academic, personal/social, and career domains. A school counselor can help a student in areas such as time management, study skills, interacting with others, identifying personal values, friendships, and assist in the early stages of career exploration.

A school counselor also provides students and their families support during a time of crisis and can refer them to outside counseling services for more extensive treatment.

3. Is my student's information protected?

Information students share with the school counselor is confidential. The student’s right to privacy is guarded as much as permitted by law, ethics, and school rules. The school counselor is obligated to break confidentiality when there is a potential harm to the student or others, concern of neglect or abuse, or a court of law that requires testimony or student records. The school counselor often consults with other school professionals, but only shares information necessary to achieving the goals of the consultation.
