Incorporate Math at Home

1. If you don’t have an outdoor thermometer, you may want to purchase one. It is good practice to read the temperature daily and notice weather patterns as they change with the seasons. You can find some relatively inexpensive ones at most stores.

2. Practice counting money using various coin combinations. Give your child a variety of coins (dimes, quarters, pennies, nickels) and ask them to count it. Then ask them to show a certain amount using different combinations of coins. For example, a quarter equals 25 cents, but 2 dimes and a nickel also equal 25 cents. Practice making change with your child. You may set up a “store” at home and label items to play with. If a pencil is $0.37 and you pay with a dollar, how much change should you receive?

3. Tell time with clocks with hands to the nearest minute!!! So many of us use digital clocks in our homes that sometimes we forget how important telling time is. If it is 2:15, ask your child a different way to tell what time it is. Such as, quarter after 2:00. Then ask them how many minutes until 3:00.

4. Review with your child basic math facts, such as 7 days in a week, 12 months in a year, 365 days in a year, 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, and the difference between AM and PM. Discuss what types of things you do at different times of the day.

5. Don’t forget basic addition and subtraction strategies. This will help with multiplication and division! Flash cards are always great tools to use!
