1st quarter

Unit 0: Introduction, Science Safety, Engineering Practices & Note booking

Unit 1: Forces and Motion (about 9 weeks)

· Speed, graphing and calculating average speed (velocity)

· Force and motion as it pertains to Newton’s Laws

· Balanced and unbalanced Forces

· Effects of forces on motion

· Relationship between gravity, mass, and distance

2nd quarter

Unit 2: Waves (about 7 weeks)

· Properties and behaviors of mechanical and electromagnetic waves

· Behavior of mechanical waves as they intersect

· Human perception of color as a result of light wave behaviors

· Electromagnetic spectrum and use of technology to meet human needs

3rd quarter

Unit 3: Earth’s Place in the Universe (about 7 weeks)

· Surface features of the Sun

· Effect of solar phenomena on the Earth

· Rotation vs. revolution, phases of the moon/tides/eclipses, and reasons for the seasons

· Components of our solar system, types of galaxies, space distance measurements

· Exploration of space utilizing modern day space tool technology

4th quarter

Unit 4: Earth’s Systems and Resources (about 5 weeks)

· Earth’s layers and its relationship to plate tectonic movement and subsequent geologic processes/landforms that result-earthquakes, volcanoes, weathering, erosion, deposition, etc.

· Evidence to support Continental Drift Theory as it evolved into modern day Plate Tectonics Theory

· Rocks and Minerals-rock cycle, physical/chemical characteristics of minerals, renewable vs. nonrenewable resources and their global distribution based on geologic processes over time

Unit 5: Earth’s History and Diversity of Life (about 4 weeks)

· Fossils-types and relative vs. absolute dating

· Geologic time scale

· Plant and animal adaptations to their environments

· Past and present catastrophic influences on geologic and biodiversity

· Natural vs. man-made causes of extinction
