School Counseling 101

What Exactly Does A School Counselor Do Anyway?

I'm so glad you asked! Although we receive extensive education and training in counseling, our function in the school is to support you academically, emotionally, and in your post-secondary plans. Basically, think of your school counselor as an emergency room physician. If you experience an academic or emotional emergency, our job is to help you resolve it quickly and to get you back to class as soon as possible. Certainly, we wish that we could talk to students at length, but on-going therapy isn't our function or purpose in the school (please click the picture below to learn more about the high school counselor's role).

When Can I See My School Counselor?

Please come talk to me during Flex (with a pass from your Flex teacher), after you finish your lunch, or after school. If you have an academic, social, and/or career issue and must talk to me during one of your classes, please get a pass from your teacher before coming to my office. That said, always feel free to drop by my office to just say, 'Hi!,' too!

NOTE: If a student believes that they or another student is in danger while on campus, or that they may need regular, on-going emotional support outside of school, they should see me or another faculty member, as soon as possible.

What's Up With The 'Rogue 20'?

Thank you for asking! First, although I now work with all four grades, last names C-F and T, I'll still be texting the Class of 2020 about grade-level events/activities/opportunities. Second, I'm a giant Star Wars fan, so I'm constantly trying to find ways to incorporate Star Wars universe into any aspect of school counseling that I can. I'm an original trilogy gal at heart, but last year's 'Rogue One' definitely ranks. I was inspired by Rogue One's determination to work together to accomplish their goal. I especially loved how beings from different star systems all pulled together to meet their common goal. When things didn't go as planned, they adapted, changed their plan on the fly, and kept on going. I like to think of the RHS student body this way as well - we're all in this together as a team, working very hard to graduate with the highest grades possible, and making friends along the way. We'll stay together and help each other through thick and thin, all the while remembering that, "Rebellions are built on hope." ( Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, 'Rogue One')
