Welcome to 3rd Grade

Dear Parents,

I am thrilled to be sharing this school year, 2022-2023, with you and your child. This year will be an exciting and busy one! To make your child’s transition into 3rd grade run smoothly, I’d like to inform you of some procedural items that will be used throughout the year.

My belief is that each child is capable of learning when given the tools they need to succeed. The most important part of my job is to find out how to best help your child become the best he/she can be. To do this, part of my goal for your child is to help them to become lifelong readers and to encourage them to want to seek additional information on their own.

I have high standards for my students and myself, and have found that when given opportunities, students will rise to the challenge. I also think that part of helping students succeed academically is instilling a sense of responsibility and accountability in them.

Teacher-student-parent communication is also a key in advancing your child’s education. Let's have lots of communication and patience with each other as we start this new year together. To do this, please make sure I have a current email address that you will check on a regular basis.

Your child is your most important thing in the world, so feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I want all children to feel safe, comfortable, and loved in my classroom.

Please read the following information carefully so that we are all “on the same page” regarding basic classroom procedures.

Reading: We are going to be doing a lot of reading this year! Students will be required to read at least 15 minutes at home daily. Please make sure your child has a variety of reading materials to choose from. They can check out books from our school library, through the Destiny Discover System (more information will come about this), and by going to Epic ( listed on the PRES website under Quicklinks). Encourage your child to discover the fun of reading by providing grade level, appropriate, and interesting books for them.

Classroom News: I will send you a newsletter each Friday telling you of any upcoming news, projects, tests, and quizzes for the upcoming week. The newsletter will also be posted on the website. Students will have important dates written in their student planner. Please read the newsletter carefully. It will help you keep track of news and assignments.

Class Rules: To make it easier to run a successful and safe classroom, there are rules that we must have and I expect every student to make the choice to obey them. Your support and cooperation will be greatly appreciated

Students are encouraged to bring a snack and a water bottle, thermos, or cup with lid (water only) to keep on their desk to have during the day.

School opens at 7:00. Please do not bring your child and drop them off before this time. Breakfast is provided free to all students.School Lunches will be $2.50 a day.

Instruction Time: School begins at 7:45 . That means your child should be in the classroom and ready to go at 7:45. The first week or so I know that we will be backed up in the mornings, so please plan to leave a few minutes early to avoid the traffic and not be late. After the first week or so, any child that is not in the classroom at 7:45 will be counted “tardy”.

*Please make sure your child has their backpack tag on their backpack. (This was given to you in the parent packet.)

*Children will need to bring Chromebooks and homework folders back and forth to school each day.

*Please remember to return the parent packet and Chromebook agreement form.

SNACKS: You are welcome to send in snacks for the class, but you can not send in homemade treats. All snacks must be individually wrapped and you must send in the label that lists the ingredients, due to allergies. Right now, we have 22 students in our class.

In conclusion, I encourage you to continue to be actively involved in your child’s learning. However, let your child take ownership of their work and be responsible and accountable for their actions. Third grade is a very difficult year. Third grade is a year of exceptional growth. I know by working together we can make this a wonderful and productive year for your child! I look forward to working with you!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns that arise during the year. You may contact me at 355-7614 (school number) or nbanning@greenville.k12.sc.us. Please note that phone calls go directly to voicemail during class time, and I only check my emails in the morning before school and in the afternoon after school. If there is something I need to address immediately, please send a note to school with your child.

My goal is to return phone messages and emails within twenty-four hours. If you have a change in how your child goes home during the day, please call the office.

Please visit my website for more information.

Medical Health Services

GREENVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS

In an effort to decrease the spread of contagious illness at school, the school district would like to remind you of the following:

If your student has fever, they must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school (this means without the use of fever reducing medications). Fever is defined as a temperature of 100.4 or greater.

If your student has diarrhea, they must be diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school (this means without the use of diarrhea suppressing medication). Diarrhea is defined as 3 or more episodes of loose stools in a 24 hour period.

A student must not come to school if vomiting 2 or more times in 24 hours. A student should have 1 or 2 meals without vomiting before returning to school. If you have questions concerning your student’s health, please contact your school nurse. Thank you for your assistance in decreasing the spread of illness.

GCS Student Email Accounts Information

Every GCS student has an email address assigned to them, but only 3rd-5th graders at PRES will be taught how to access their account. Each student has a username and email that will remain the same as long as they are a student at a Greenville County School. The email for our district is your child’s username followed by @greenvilleschools.us.

This account is very important because it allows access to Google Apps for Education. It is also the account that will be used as the logon for Chromebooks. This account is owned by GCS and can be accessed by tech support if there are problems. This is not a private account and it should only be used for educational purposes. DO NOT use this account to sign up for other online accounts unless it is approved by the school. DO NOT use this account for personal email.

So what is Google Apps? Google Apps is the platform that GCS has selected for our technology needs. It includes:

● Drive - the master file manager containing all documents created and shared

● Docs - word processing

● Slides - presentations

● Sheets - spreadsheet data

Students are able to collaborate and share projects online and turn in assignments directly to teachers. Some teachers will even use Google Classroom to organize and assign work. Assignments will be saved to the student’s Google Drive, which is connected to and accessed by this email address.

While it may seem overwhelming to give elementary students email accounts, it is important to start teaching kids early how to responsibly use this technology. Their world is much different and moving at a faster pace with regards to technology than any generation that has come before them.

PRES and GCS are constantly working to keep up with changing technology and to educate students how to use it responsibly. Parents can help by monitoring students at home and keeping track of usernames and passwords. While we stress the importance of password safety and secrecy, it has been communicated that parents are the exception and should know this information.

Some basic rules we are teaching about responsible use:

● Only use GCS account for educational purposes.

● Do not post, comment, or send anything you wouldn’t want your teacher or parents to see.

● The internet is forever - just because you delete an item doesn’t mean it is gone.

● Keep your password a secret.

● GCS can access the account if there is a problem.

● Tell a parent or teacher immediately if you receive communication that is inappropriate or from someone you don't know.

It is extremely important that students, families, teachers, and schools all work together to monitor and guide our students while they navigate this constantly changing technology. Advancements are made at an exhausting pace, but if parents and educators communicate and model safe and responsible use, our students will be better equipped to handle these changes and be responsible digital citizens.

Flu symptoms in children

Children often have similar symptoms to adults but can also have gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The symptoms of influenza typically come on suddenly. Initially, a person with flu may experience:

  • a high temperature

  • a stuffy or runny nose

  • a dry cough

  • cold sweats and shivers

  • aches that may be severe

  • a headache

  • fatigue, and a feeling of being unwell

  • a low appetite

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a person with flu may experience:

  • a high temperature that lasts 3–4 days

  • a stuffy or runny nose

  • cold sweats and shivers

  • aches that may be severe

  • a headache

  • fatigue

Not everyone with flu will have all of these symptoms. For instance, it is possible to have flu without a fever.

Contagiousness

The flu virus transmits through droplets of liquid. A person can pass the virus on to another person who is up to 6 feet away from them when they cough, sneeze, talk, or breathe.

A healthy individual can pass on the virus a day before they, themselves, have symptoms. In other words, it is possible to pass on the flu before you know you have it. The infected individual can continue to transmit the virus for up to 5–7 days after symptoms appear.

People with a weakened immune system, older people, and young children may be able to pass on the virus for longer than this.

Flu is most contagious in the first 3–4 days after symptoms appear.

How long does it last?

Flu symptoms appear suddenly, usually around 2 days after infection. Most symptoms disappear after about 1 week, but a cough may last for up to 2 weeks.

In some cases, a person may still be contagious for up to 1 week after their symptoms have disappeared.
