Class Activities and Assignments:

I use Google Classroom in my classes. Parents can use their child’s credentials to log in and see what is happening in our class. I have also posted my class calendars publicly on this site for reference.

Seal of Biliteracy

The Connecticut State Seal of Biliteracy was established in 2017 to recognize public high school graduates who have attained a level of proficiency in English and one or more languages.

Proficiency is determined through scoring on one of several state approved assessment tools such as the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) or the Advanced Placement Exam. Students meeting the criteria for biliteracy receive a seal affixed to their diploma and to their high school transcript.

The marker is useful to both employers and to colleges and universities. It helps to identify students with verified multilingual skills.

The goal of 8th grade French 1 is to attain basic proficiency in French in the ares of speaking, listening, reading and writing. By reinforcing material learned in Grade 6 and 7 French and adding new vocabulary and concepts, the 8th grade student will be able to perform simple functions in the language using all four skill areas.

My goal is for every student to be successful in French!

Curriculum:

In Glastonbury we have designed our own foreign language curriculum. This curriculum is driven by the national and state language standards that revolve around the strands of communication, culture, connections to other disciplines, comparisons to native language and community involvement. We are making a great effort to be more interdisciplinary in our approach while at the same time helping students develop communication skills. Through several years of federal grants for curriculum and assessment around national and state language standards, we have worked to identify themes in which students are interested. We will focus our learning to answer the essential question “What is foreign?” so that students are able to compare and contrast the lives of French and Quebecois teenagers with their own. Many types of assignments will be given in order to give every student a chance of being successfully involved in speaking, writing, reading or creative expression.

Materials:

Students will use Allez, viens! (a class set) as a reference. In addition, the students will be using all of the textbook’s ancillary materials that constitute an excellent supplement: overhead transparencies, cassette and video tapes, activity book exercises, cd-rom.

Language Lab: (Currently suspended due to COVID restrictions)

Smith Middle School has a brand new state of the art language laboratory. This facility brings a host of learning opportunities using the latest technology to our classes. The lab is equipped to allow students to actively engage in a variety of speaking and listening activities with each other in the target language. They can also access the internet, Copernicus portal and carefully selected websites, watch and listen to videos, interact with CD-rom programs, record their own voice, view cultural objects of interest up close using the video projector, and even text each other in the foreign language. Students will use the lab once every two weeks to work on their speaking, listening and presentation skills.
