J5 Learning Resources
Hello parents,
Below are links to websites that you can use for online learning with your children while at home. There are some websites for online games, videos, ideas for learning at home, easy art activities for home and a lot more. There are a lot of links, so do not feel the need to try to get through them all, this is more for a bank of resources that you can use to get you through each day! There is also a link below to a folder with a few of the resources we have downloaded for our own class.
On a daily basis I would advise to put on my circle time video and 1 other activity, if you can manage to spend some time with your child doing this it would be very beneficial to get them involved in some of the below activities.
Also have a think about the environment you are about to set up an activity in – is it calm? Can you dim the lights? If possible, find a quiet, calm space where no one is going to disturb your activity.
Below is a videoed version of our circle time that we do each morning. Along the bar at the top of this website is also the songs we use to help our routine along each day. There is also a tab for creative literacy that will give you instructions on how to make playdough, etc for your home.
Thanks,
The J5 Team
J5 Circle Time - Please now find Circle Time on Seasaw only.
I have videoed our daily circle time for the pupils – I would encourage you to get interactive with your child and join in with the songs and actions which are so familiar to them. It may sound so simple but try and do the circle time before a mid-morning snack or feed and around the same time everyday (if this is possible – I know childcare and other siblings can all have an impact).
Sensory Massage Story
I have only started these with the pupils and already they are one of my favourite activities! It would be great to get two family members involved of possible! One person can read the story and the other person can do the massage – this is all about interaction. I read the story slowly and often repeat the words twice to help engage the pupil. No clothing removed or oil is required. Don’t forget if you run out of stories to use some familiar stories from home and add some massage movements of your own.
A LITTLE MORE ON INFORMATION ON SENSORY PLAY
These look amazing and I will definitely be using these with J5 in the future. Examples – Millie the Mermaid who cannot swim, Sheldon Snail’s Sunbathing session.
Singing Hands - A favourite in Riverside - lots of familiar songs with makaton signing.
Attention Autism
I know all pupils may not have autism, the name originates from Gina Davies the founder who originally used the technique with autistic children. In Riverside and many other special schools, it is used throughout all classes and it is adapted to suit the needs of the pupils. I have a video explaining the benefits of the sessions for our pupils on Seasaw. Feel free to watch other educators performing these sessions - but please be aware we are only at ‘the bucket stage.’
Gina Davis has some videos and articles if you are interested in finding out more about Attention Autism. I have one videoed session which is uploaded on Seasaw and more uploads will follow in time.
The Gina Davies Autism Centre facebook page is where you will find the most current and up to date sessions. Remember we are only at the bucket stage!
Jo Jingles is a movement and music programme which we use in Riverside school. The pupils really love it!
Getting Ready to Learn - This is a programme of ideas and suggestions to help your children with home learning from the Education Authority. It may also be beneficial for siblings.
