The Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program provides $5 billion in grants to states, local governments, Tribes, and territories to develop and implement ambitious plans for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other harmful air pollution. Authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, this two-phase program provides $250 million for noncompetitive planning grants, and approximately $4.6 billion for competitive implementation grants.
ATNI was awarded CPRG funds to collaborate, convene, assess, and build capacity to aid our 57 member Tribes in meeting their climate pollution reduction goals. Since receiving the funds and with close collaboration with our membership, ATNI has completed a Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP). The PCAP is intended to help our member Tribes:
Improve their understanding of current and future GHG emissions;
Identify priority actions to reduce GHG emissions and develop comprehensive, long-term solutions to maximize the potential benefits of climate resiliency actions; and,
Ensure future generations of Tribal members are able to thrive in resilient and carbon-negative communities in their permanent homelands.
The PCAP was the first phase of assisting our member Tribes in developing effective climate responses. The information gathered from the initial planning phase will be used to develop a Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) that will provide a comprehensive overview of each Tribes’ significant GHG sources/sinks and sectors, establish near-term and long-term GHG emissions reduction goals, and provide strategies to meet these goals. Over the next two years, ATNI will be collaborating with member Tribes and other entities (states, municipalities, organizations) to develop collaborative solutions with neighboring communities and highlight opportunities to work towards mitigating GHG emissions.
Interested ATNI member Tribes are invited to work with ATNI staff and technical specialist to complete their own individual CCAP guided by their unique GHG emission goals.
