About the band
The start of the 2020-21 school year was to mark the grand opening of the brand new Odessa High School as part of the state of the art Fairview Campus-- a model for 21st century education. With the opening of the building came many firsts to include the first Odessa High Band. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, insted of the halls reverberating with the first notes of the Class of 2024, the start of the year was met with the defening sound of silence.
Why would a student choose to be in band during the pandemic knowing that they may not get to socially make music with their peers in a classroom when they could've just easily taken another AP class? It was clear that the founding students of our program longed for a sense of connection-- a connection that being in band brought them. While they knew things would eventually get better, they had to BELIEVE it as well.
Before a single note had ever been played-- knowing their why, discussing how they would achieve it and what they wanted their program to be, the Odessa High School Band program was able to find their sound in silence.
As part of a Best Communities for Music Education award winner from 2016-23, the OHS Band looks forward to developing rich traditions and connections with parents, our school, our administration, and the community. Each student, instructor and parent volunteer in the organization understands that they are but temporary stewards of the program and as such, must diligently protect what has been entrusted to them. We firmly believe it is the journey that makes the difference and the growth attained through the process is more important that any product that may result. It is through this journey we will build our band family and always remember to "Believe".
