Dr. Jerry L. Aiello has practiced Japanese Budo 武道 (traditional martial arts) and Zen philosophy since 1967. In 1974, he established ShitoKan International as an institute for the preservation, practice, and research of the art of Budo and Japanese philosophy. Since then, Dr. Aiello taught traditional Budo such as Karate Do 空手道, Aiki Jujutsu 合気柔術, Goshin Jutsu 護身術and Kobudo 古武道, hosted the syndicated talk radio show dedicated to the academic scholastic revolution in martial arts, produced several books and educational materials, provided numerous lectures around the world. ShitoKan Dojo was sanctioned as a Shibu (branch) Zen Dojo by Hirai Shoshu Roshi 平井正修老子, ZenshoAn 全生庵 (temple), Japan, and Dr. Aiello received his Koji Name (Dharma name), Rando Koji 藍道居士, as a Zen Minister.
In 2007, Hirai Roshi introduced Dr. Aiello to Murakami Sensei 村上先生 and Izaki Sensei 井崎先生, the sixth and seventh Menkyo Kaiden of Muto Ryu 無刀流, respectively. Unusual and rare in itself, the meetings were the beginning of a direct and close relationship between Dr. Aiello’s ShitoKan, and Yamaoka Tesshu’s Muto Ryu, and the leaders of these arts. The meetings culminated in Murakami Sensei bestowing "Mon-Jin-Sho 門人証 (Official Direct Practitioner Certificate)" along with one of the few complete transcripts of Yamaoka Tesshu’s writings to Dr. Aiello. Dr. Aiello was featured in the NHK (Japan National Broadcast) production “21st Century Travel to Bukkyo” 『五木寛之21世紀仏教への旅』, with Mr. Hiroyuki Itsuki (the phenomenal novelist of Japan) out of gratitude for their profound friendship. Dr. Aiello continues to study Rinzai Zen under Hirai Roshi and the teaching of late Nakagawa Kyudo Roshi 中川球童老師 of Ryutaku Ji 龍澤寺, Shizuoka, Japan.
