"Is that my child?" ?.. are the words we often hear from parents when they observe their child in the ShitoKan class after a couple of weeks of training. Children are the future. Every single one has a beautiful seed, and our job as adults is to provide the best soil possible, the best water possible, and our unconditional love until the day they bloom into beautiful flowers.
Children naturally love discipline. Do you disagree? Please come and see ShitoKan classes. All that is needed is to set up the right place and right opportunities for them to exhibit their sincerity, enthusiasm and honesty. Discipline is the only and necessary tool for them to truly express these. You do not need to explain it to them. If you put yourself at the level of children and look
into their eyes, you find them full of love and passion, ready to explore.
Youth Academy of the ShitoKan program includes learning greetings, correct breathing, sound focus training, standing and sitting in correct postures, falls and rolls, Japanese language and ancient masters' words of wisdom. We accomplish this through self defense instruction and aerobic exercises, by directly reading Chinese characters, and through discussion on various philosophies (children are such philosophers, if you don't already know).
Makoto 誠 is the word passed on by ancient masters through the hundreds of years' lineage of our practice, and it sits at the core of what we do. It means sincerity and honesty, or manifestation of heart and mind.
See you at the ShitoKan dojo.

What is ShitoKan Youth Academy?
The class is basically for children from age 6; however, please call us even if your child is younger than 6 and wishes to enroll. The class is conducted both in English and Japanese by professionally certified instructors.
Nationality or cultural back ground of students are diverse: US, Japanese, European, etc. The class is lively and full of fun. It begins with correct greetings, phonetics, Taiso体操(calisthenics), training of basic movements and agility, focus and cautiousness, readiness, basic self-defense techniques, quick response to the situation, and respect towarad all sentient beings.
In accordance with Kancho (Head of the dojo) Dr. Aiello's philosophy, Japanese ancient masters' sayings and writings are taught directly in Japanese, such as 「文武両道Bunbu Ryodo 」、「七転八起Nanakorobi Yaoki」、「温故知新Onko Chishin」、in order to learn the core value of the meaning. Special and fun-filling "ShitoKan Denshin Direct" Method is used so all children are fully enjoying and learning, regardless of their mother languages. This method, utilizing senses of hearing, seeing, touching, voicing and "sixth" sense, has proved not only the ability to enhance childrens' reading skill and understanding of Japanese and philosophy, but also stimulates their brain to open up to other potential and confidence.
ShitoKan Dojo is not-for-profit organization. Due to the nature of the highly personal and quality program, ShitoKan Youth Academy invites only those children whose parents/guardians are, or are willing to be, committed. The students are accepted upon interview for a one-month trial. After one month, the instructors will discuss with parents an official acceptance to the program.
The Dojo is located in the center of Clawson, Michigan, at the South West corner of 14 Mile and Main. Please refer to the map. Call 248-542-4314 (c/o Aiello Group) or send e-mail to

VOICE OF SHITOKAN STUDENTS/PARENTS
The experience that I have had in Shitokan was learning to have self-defense and having control of my body and my actions.
I have learned to meditate and control my angers and fears and to empty my mind and to get ready for what’s ahead of me.
I have learned a second language (Japanese) so in the morning when I walk in to the door I know how to greet everyone the right way.
I have made a commitment that will make my way to become an aspiring sensei and to inspire the children to set their mind to it and to work hard
and to do your personal excellence to achieve your goal or commitment.
I’m still working hard after almost three years and I have fun with it.

My child enjoys ShitoKan very much. He started to clean his own room, and I believe it is because of ShitoKan. I love to see all the students clean the training floor after the class. 私の子供は系東館が大好きです。系東館に通い始めたらなんと自分の部屋を初めて自分で掃除するようになりました。教室のあとに全員でトレイニングルームを掃除しますが、素晴らしいと思います。
