Bible: We are wrapping up our Unit 1 and 2 Keynote. These Keynotes pull together some of the ideas of the first couple units while helping the kids to understand how to use the Keynote program better. We will begin in Genesis 1 and cover the first few chapters of the Bible as we look at what we can learn about God as we study these stories.

Science - We are continuing to discover more about rocks as we finished up talking about the third type of rock this week and relating them to our crayon models.  Now in order to connect this with our world and how we use rocks the students were asked to pick a certain rock and research some ways in which it is used for everyday purposes.  They will be given more class time on Monday to complete this.  Next week we will investigate the rock cycle.

See the letter below about the need in the Philippines and how we can help.

Philippines Emergency Aid

WE CAN HELP – WE MUST HELP

FACTS:

  • The worst flood in 40 years hit the Philippines earlier this week and was especially devastating in the Manila area where Pastor Leo, Elma, Precy, and our other friends live and work.
  • Over 250 people have died so far.
  • Over 1.9 million people have been displaced and their houses have been badly damaged.
  • Classrooms at Grace Christian School were filled with water. Education material was destroyed. Tables and furniture were ruined.
  • Clean up efforts have begun. Mud, garbage, and other pollution needs to be cleaned out of the school. Walls need to be repaired and painted. Desks and tables that are usable need to be dried. Others need to be replaced. School materials cannot be easily replaced and will be replaced slowly over the coming years.
  • School families have lost their homes and are in desperate need of help.
  • Some school families have lost all of their earthly belongings including all their clothes other than the ones they had on when the flooding started.
CHALLENGE:
  • As a school system we have developed a wonderful relationship with Grace Community Christian Reformed Church and Grace Community Christian School. Our friends are in need. Six dollars will hire a laborer for a day or two. One dollar will replace a classroom book or other educational material. Gifts of money in any form will be deeply appreciated. If you are writing a check, it should be made out to Zeeland Christian School with Philippines aid in the memo line.
  • Please prayerfully consider this emergency need. Our goal is to send any money we collect to Grace Christian School by next week Monday.

This activity helps them explore how archaeologists and historians study the past. We are learning how to make hypotheses using clues that we have available to us. We will work through this lesson and have a short assessment toward the end of the week. Each lesson lasts about 3-6 days and ends with an assessment. The kids did well on their first D.O.G. quiz today.

Bible: The first lessons in Bible are introductory before we get into looking at the stories themselves. Next week we will look at inspiration, the writing of the Bible, and the geography of the land of the Bible. September 9, 2009

We are updating this from camp. We have had a great time so far today. The kids have been great and we praise God for absolutely beautiful weather.

Our morning was spent with some community building games and a lesson on how our words that put down others can break down community in a hurry. Some of the things that we say without even thinking can do a lot of damage to another person's feelings. The kids have been very willing to participate in any activity.

We had a great time in the water this afternoon. We were able to swim, climb on the iceberg, the Saturn, kayaks, and water bikes. The sun came out and the temperature warmed up so we had a great time.

This afternoon we had our second lesson time. This time we focused on lying and its effect on community.  We found that the temptation to lie is fairly great.

Continue to pray for great attitudes, safety for everyone, a growing sense of community, and that God is praised through everything that happens at camp.

September 3, 2009

We had another great day of computer training. Most of the kids were able to get on the internet and were able to do most of the things that we were trying to do. We are thankful for the fantastic attitudes that the kids exhibited, especially by the kids you were unable to access the internet. Most of these bugs should be worked out by Tuesday.

We talked with the kids about camp today. We hope we alleviated some of the fears and answered their questions. If you lost or misplaced forms and letters, you can access them by clicking on "Handouts" on the left side of this page. We are praying for good weather, but we know that whatever happens this camp should be a great time for building community in the 6th grade class.

Have a great holiday weekend. It appears that summer has arrived.

Remember the Hillside Praise Service tonight. The dinner will be served beginning at 6:00, service at 7:00, and then open house following that.

We had a great day of computer training. The kids were great working through a lot of new material. Most of the kids were able to get on the things that we were trying to work on. There were, of course, some glitches, but it seems that most of them were able to be worked out.

The kids were given the ZCS Acceptable Use form to take home. This is a form that both the kids and you, as parents, have to sign. We encourage you to sign that and return it as soon as possible. There will be more forms that you will be given regarding computers when we meet on Sept. 16 at the Parent Information night. See the Blue Note for information about that evening.

Welcome to our web page!  Check this site often for homework and reminders.

We had a great time today getting to know the sixth graders.  We started the day with a Middle School Chapel.  Ask your child what our theme is this year.  We also played a few games that helped us to mingle as a class and get to observe some of the personalities of this group.  We then attended a whole school chapel with a sermonette by Mr. Van Dyk and praise and worship time led by Mr. Lowe.  We (Mr. B, Mr. N, Mrs. Z, and Miss Velthouse, the new Spanish teacher) shared a part of our faith stories with the kids.  Ask them what objects we brought in.  We ended the day with some hilarious skits that taught the different rules of Middle School.  Please see the handbook that was sent home with your child today.  Your child also received a copy of his/her schedule for the first six weeks.

Advanced notice:  Your child received a paper today that requires him/her to ask for your help.  On his/her birthday or half birthday, he/she will share items from his/her life with his/her homeroom class. Check the handout section on the left side if you need a new planning your presentation sheet.  This sheet is due on Tuesday, September 8.

We look forward to meeting many of you at the Hillside Prayer and Praise Night this Wednesday.P
