Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences: It was again a great thing to be able to meet with you during the last week. We, as a team, appreciate your support of our efforts at school. We truly do feel blessed to have parents who support us and support what we are trying to accomplish here. We appreciate the fact that you entrust us with your children each day. We hope that we have been able to share clearly how important each of your kids are to us.
Math - This week we wrapped up the unit on integers and graphing. Next week we will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday, and have a test on Wednesday. This unit can be difficult for those who don't pay attention to detail and remember the rules. Therefore, I really encourage a lot of practice before the test. A review sheet and practice will be handed out on Monday.
Science - This week in Science we were able to get a better perspective on the world and the use of water. We had a guest speaker come in on Tuesday to talk about the effects of contaminated water in Cameroon, Africa. She is an expert in the field of studying water and its effects on people who use it for their daily needs. The students were shocked at the findings and have a new perspective on the blessings we have in this country. We also discussed global warming and what that is doing to our planet. Even though there is a debate on whether humans add to the affects of global warming, we were reminded that, as Christians, it is part of our responsibility and purpose to take care of the earth and be "green".

Next week we will be learning about the Shang Dynasty. The activities in these lessons are all intended to build knowledge of these ideas and concepts in multiple ways.
Bible: We have been covering the stories of the Israelites conquest of Canaan. As we read from scripture, the kids are starting to see how God's ways for working out his plans are sometimes difficult for us to understand. The kids ask good questions. Fundraising for GLOW Ministry: We were thrilled to be able to raise funds for GLOW through our Beach Day activity. God really blessed this activity and we raised over $450.00. This will allow GLOW to provide lunch for 120 kids for a month in the village of Gardere. For many of the kids, this is the only meal that they will have during a day so this is a wonderful thing that we could provide.
Bible: Today we covered the story of Joshua 3-4 where the Israelites cross the Jordan River into Canaan. We discussed the idea of setting up the memorial of stones so that the stories of God's greatness and goodness could be told. On Monday we are going to talk about stories of God's greatness and goodness that we have experienced in our own lives. It would be fantastic if you get an opportunity to share with your kids or have your parents share experiences where the hand of God has been so evident. We want to be able to tell those stories. We will continue then with stories of the conquest of Canaan.
SS: The kids did a great job on their Gupta Empire palm-leaf books. Their knowledge and creativity can out in this activity. Science - This week we discovered and investigated how the ocean gets salty and how that fits into the water cycle. Next week will be a big week on understanding how water gets polluted and strategies we can do to minimize pollution. This will be tied into our theme of stewardship these past six weeks. The students will understand that one of their roles as a Christian is to take care of God's creation and what that really means to us today in a high technology and energy using world. We will also look into how blessed we are to have clean water to drink everyday compared to different parts of the world.
Math - We have been practicing ( a lot) and learning how to add and subtract positive and negative integers. These concepts will be built on next week as we multiply and divide and understand order of operations.

Check out the letter from administration regarding students staying after school.
February 18, 2009
Middle School Parents,
Some of your children love school so much they don't want to go home at the end of the day. We love your kids, but with so many staying after for no valid reason other than “hanging out,” it has become a problem.
If they are waiting for siblings to be picked up at 3:25 or a ball game to begin – no problem as long as they are in a supervised room doing homework. If they just want to play games on their laptops or roam around school, then it becomes a problem. Because teachers have responsibilities after school, students are often left unsupervised. This has led to some unfortunate incidents.
We would really appreciate your help in making sure your son or daughter is staying after school for a valid reason. Thanks for your help and support.

Bible Memory Work: Due Friday- Colossians 3:12, I Peter 2:9, Genesis 12:2-3
-Most kids did very well on last week's verses. Stay on top of these as we add a new one each week.
September 12, 2008
We have completed a five day week. This has been a good week of getting more academics accomplished and establishing routines for the kids (and teachers) to follow. We appreciate the great turnout the parent night. If you did not make that meeting, your child received the handouts on Wednesday. If you have questions about any of that, give us a call or fire off an email.
Today's posting should give you a look into what we will be doing next week.
Memory Work: Colossians 3:12, I Peter 2:9, and the new one, Genesis 12:2-3.
Bible: The first couple units are introduction. We have a lesson on Monday on the faithfulness of God even in response to human unfaithfulness. Then we will be focusing on information about the Bible-languages of, types of literature in, and where the stories of the Bible take place. All of this is important in setting the stage for understanding the Bible stories.
SS: We have begun our look at how archeologists, historians, and geographers study the past. We will work through that in the first couple days of the week. Following that, we will begin to look at the development from villages to the rise of Sumerian city-states. The new curriculum requires the students to do a fair amount of reading for information but also exploration of ideas for discussion. We are also trying to keep an eye on what is happening in the world and looking at news stories that are impacting our world. Each day we do a short geography study and on Friday have a short quiz on what we did that week. If they are in tune during the week, prepping for the quiz should be minimal.
Math: This week the students have been learning about prime and composite numbers, and how to find the factors of numbers. There is a game on Moodle called the Factor Game that they are encouraged to play for extra practice. Next week will look into products and finding the common factors and multiples of two numbers. The goal is for the students to understand the relationships that are made between numbers and their products, and to stretch their brain. Many will come home feeling like their head will hurt after doing some difficult thinking. This is a good thing.
Science: Motion and the Scientific Method have been our first topics of discussion. The students built small cars out of minimal materials that they raced, collected data, and reported on. This exercise helped them understand why a method is important when doing any investigation. Next week we will continue to use the Scientific Method and look into the importance of observation and inference.
6A Health and Fitness: Fill out an activity log by next week Thursday.
LA- Next week we will continue reading White Mountains and answering questions in moodle. In our six traits writing, we will focus on narrowing our topics. In grammar, we will continue working with the parts of a sentence (complete subject/complete predicate.) We will complete two new analogies and continue with our MUG shots.
September 11, 2008
LA - Finish your outdoor adventure paragraph in NeoOffice. Submit your Wht. Mts. questions chapter 1 using moodle.
Bible: Finish the drawings on sheet, "God's Promises Kept." Due on Friday.
Reminders- Growing Pains sheet due on Friday and Bible Memory (Colossians 3:12, 1 Peter 2:9) due tomorrow too. Pizza/Pop day tomorrow - a dollar each.
Check the site tomorrow to get an idea of what the kids will be doing next week. This will serve as the weekly newsletter.
September 10, 2008
SS: Today the kids worked in partnerships to do a geography activity which helped them to understand more about the world in general and the area of Mesopotamia specifically.
Math - Play the Factor Game on the computer found on Moodle -> Math
LA- Read pgs. 9-19 in White Mts. and finish block/title paper.
Reminder: Memory work-Colossians 3:12 and I Peter 2:9 due on Friday.
Growing Pains planning sheet due on Friday.
September 9, 2008
Bible Memory: For Friday-Colossians 3:12, I Peter 2:9
Growing Pains Sheet: Due on Friday-Discuss with your children.
Bible: We worked through an exercise that looked at the promises of God that are present throughout the Old Testament.
LA - Read pages 1-9 in The White Mountains. Do MUG shot #2. Study Bible Memory which is due Friday. Finish your Growing Pains sheet by Friday.
Science/Math - Today we raced our Moto-Vehicles and collected data on distances. We learned how to find averages and graph the data using a computer program called Inspiredata.
Check the picture link on the left to see pictures from Camp Geneva.

L.A.- We continued our study of the eight Multiple Intelligences. We used Biblegateway to see what God says about our gifts. We discussed and pronounced the word "genre." We defined Science Fiction since the book we start reading tomorrow is of that genre. We also did MUG shots which your child can show you in his/her folder.
Bible: After discussing how the Bible is the story of God and his people, the kids completed a short assignment that asked them to reflect how God has worked in their past, is working in the present, and will be working in their life in the future.
SS: We spent a lot of time putting the final preparations in place with computers. Then we did our first Daily Geography, which will be something that we will be doing each day.
-See you tomorrow night at the Parent Meeting ( 7:40-8:10 in the Media Center.)
-The homework for today is the Growing Pains sheet and Bible Memory verses - both due on Friday.

What a great week at camp! The energy was palpable as we left for camp Wednesday morning. Some were nervous, some were excited, and most did not know what to expect. We praise God for the great weather on Wednesday as we were able to do activities, games, and lessons as planned. However, on Thursday, due to the relentless rain, we were forced to change a few things. Most would think it would have been miserable on a full day of rain. That was not the case at all. In fact, Thursday made us even closer as as class, as we were forced to carry through with plans in closer quarters and be flexible together, and some were crazy enough to still play outside and swim. What makes camp a super positive experience is not the weather, not the activities and lessons, and not the teachers. But what makes camp a success is how God works through the hearts of the students to understand what it is all about. It couldn't have been a success without the great cooperation, enthusiasm, and respect of the students these last few days. It was so cool to see how they would lift each other up when some were struggling, and celebrate with each other when times were good. This is definitely a great group of kids and we look forward to the year ahead as we are given the opportunity to keep shaping their lives into the people God wants them to be. We will be posting pictures on Monday of the camp experience.
Next week we will be getting into our normal routine of classes. What's great about camp is that we were able to get to know the students better which makes transition to the classroom so much smoother. Just a reminder that laptop forms need to be filled out and returned before your child may bring their laptop home on Monday. Also, there will be a parent orientation night on Tuesday in the media center where we will introduce ourselves as teachers, inform you on goals and procedures of the year, and answer any questions you may have about middle school and sixth grade. We look forward to seeing you then.

Get ready for camp! Click on the handouts menu if you are missing the permission slip or list of what to bring. Watch the weather forecast as there might be rain. The kids should leave their belongings outside by the memorial and then come and sit on the 6th grade carpet area. We will go through questions etc... Remember to bring a sack lunch/snack tomorrow. Also bring all medications in a labeled ziploc type bag. We realize that some kids anxious about being away from home, and we will comfort them and keep them too busy to worry about it!
Today on class we had a chance to moodle, put the 6th grade website on a tab, and use Firefox. Ask your child, "How are you smart?"
August 28, 2008
Another great day! We spent the morning working with our laptops and learned how to create files, play with photobooth, bookmark tabs and much more. The kids were patient during "technical difficulties." We spent our homebase time discussing the amazing fellowship that we will have at camp next week. Enjoy the days with no homework!
Please remind your child to bring in the camp permission form, field trip permission form, $15 activity fee, medical forms (only if medication is needed), and on Sept. 12 the Growing Pains sheet is due.
Pray always and have a wonderful Labor Day vacation!

Here is a letter from the Smiths regarding Ginny's peanut allergy.
Classroom Medical Alert!
Dear Parents,
This note is to inform you that Ginny Smith, one of children in your 6th graders class, has a life-threatening allergy to peanuts. This includes peanuts, peanut butter, peanut candy, and even food prepared in a container that has been exposed to peanuts.
She does not need to actually eat the peanuts to have a reaction. Just being exposed to the smell can cause a reaction.
This reaction is called "Anaphylaxic Shock"
Symptoms include:
swelling of the throat to the point of being unable to breath
itching
tightness in throat
difficulty breathing
stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting
As a precaution in the classroom, Ginny will eat her lunch at a designated table with a classmate or two that have a "peanut free" lunch that day so she doesn't have to be all by herself. We are also asking that the seats closest to Ginny's be "peanut free," so the kids may need to move to a different seat at lunch time.
It would be helpful to remind your children to wah their hands with warm soapy water after consuming peanuts/peanut butter to avoid cross-contamination. Also, it would be helpful if they rinsed their mouths with water after eating peanuts/peanut butter.
When planning special treats for the class, please send in "peanut free" items.
Unfortunately, there is no cure, and no medications (or allergy shots) available for food allergies. Avoidance of triggers are the key. Ginny is very aware of her allergy and knows what she can and cannot eat.
Thank you in advance for helping us keep Ginny safe. If you have any questions, or would like more information, feel free to contact us at 748-7510. You can also find out more information at www.foodallergy.org.
Sincerely,
Gary, Diane & Ginny Smith

What a great day! We had a fun time getting to know each other through a variety of activities. This is a great bunch of kids. We could not have asked for better cooperation.
Each of the teachers shared their faith stories with the kids. We wanted the kids to hear the ways that God has worked in our lives to bring us the places where we are today. The kids will be doing something similar on their birthday. We will explain this to you on September 9, our parent orientation meeting.
The kids received a couple papers that have to be returned. The permission slip should be returned as soon as possible. The Growing Pains sheet is to be returned by September 12. The kids should bring back only the sheet, not the objects at that point. This sheet will serve as the guide for their presentation of their faith story on their birthday. Keep sending in the camp forms. There is only the one camp form for each student- not two. That was a mistake. Camp Geneva does not require a form this year. Each of the students should also bring in the $15 Activity Fee.
Tomorrow we hope to spend the day working on computer training. This is what the kids have been waiting for eagerly. Pray for patience for all of us.

Mr. Buteyn, Mr. Nagelkirk, and Mrs. Zastrow have been working at school to pull together the final details for beginning the new year. We are all excited about the beginning of a new year. There are many changes around Zeeland Christian this year so there are things for both teachers and students to adjust to. There are many changes to the building, although not many down in our area. We have many things planned and have been working to get all the details together for Sixth Grade Camp at Camp Geneva. We are really looking forward to those days during the second week of school.
If you need the camp letter or permission form, you can download them from the handouts section of this webpage. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to give one of us a call or stop in on Monday.
