Art Department

Mission Statement 

Students of District One gain appreciation and knowledge of aesthetic awareness, the fundamentals of art, art production skills, and multicultural sensitivity.  Instruction utilizes a rich art curriculum that that fosters growth, a productive scope and sequence, formative and summative assessments, and a grading system that meets or exceeds state standards.  In order to facilitate student learning we recognize diverse learning skills, address the individual needs of each student, and make necessary modifications to ensure all students’ success. 

Vision Statement 

As District One art educators we will deepen staff knowledge through collaboration by refining calendars, grading methods, and curricular components, by examining and researching educational practices, and by exploring and extending our knowledge of visual art history and production.   Student artwork will be creative, adhere to the state standards and exhibit artistic accomplishment that is a model for the state.  A website will be developed to expand student, parental, and community awareness of District One’s art department and to share methodology, skills, observations, and pedagogy with our fellow art educators and advocates. 
 
 

 Values Statement 

In order to accomplish our departmental mission and vision, District One art educators will attend district art department meetings, attend and participate in guest artist workshops, contribute to the art department website, participate in the collaborative planning and implementation of all department tasks, functions and undertakings. 

Goals Statement 

District One Art Department will pursue the accomplishment of the collaboratively established goals of the art department. 

      •  We will revise and update the district scope and sequence and the skills calendar to ensure optimal student learning. 

      •  We will develop and implement a department wide grading rubric to be posted online informing parents and community of assessment practices of the department and the expectation of student learning.

      •  We will develop and implement a common assessment to evaluate student mastery of and instructional needs of the visual arts curriculum.

      •  We will develop and maintain a department website to display the achievements of our students, our staff, and our department.

      •  We will celebrate the achievements of all who are involved in developing and participating in this Professional Learning Community.
