A HISTORY OF THE WAUCONDA COUNTRY HOME CLUB
We are country women, doing country things, the country way for over 100 years. The women began meeting in 1905. At that time the group was a literary club with book reports, poetry reading, skits and music. In 1912 the group began to hold quilting bees and met twice a month. Between meetings, the quilts were kept clean and safe by using a pulley system to draw them up to the ceiling. The women made quilts for gifts, gave bridal and baby showers, and held card parties. During this time the women also raised money to support various community activities.
In 1930 the club was officially named the Country Home Club. In 1938 we changed our meetings from twice a month to once a month. The meetings are now held on the third Thursday of the month at the Wauconda Community Hall. We meet at the Hillside Apartments in Tonasket in the months of January and February, when it is cold and the Hall is hard to heat. Our December meeting is a Christmas luncheon which is always held at a local cafe.
Our basic purpose has not changed, however, we keep inventing new ways to create funds to better support our community. We still tie quilts to give to families who need them. We send cards and food where needed and donate canned goods, etc. to support our local food bank. We try to help meet the basic needs for those in our community who are in urgeneed of help.
Our club funds itself. We do that with quilt raffles, auctions, a traveling basket, the sale of our cookbooks, bake sales, barbeque's, and crafts made and sold at holiday bazaars and other community activities. We have minimal dues and each member contributes their age in pennies on their birthday month. Our cookbook was first published in 1972 and had 4 printings. The revised edition was printed in 1994 and retained many of the wonderful, original recipes as well as recipes from our newer members. We have had 5 printings of the revised edition. We had one printing in 2003.
Our ages range from 12 to 91 and our members come from about a 30 mile radius. We are all connected by one heart, our concern for each other, and for the welfare of our community. Our club originated in Wauconda, Washginton but now that we no longer travel by horse and buggy it encompasses a much broader area.
