Off-Campus Experience Offerings ~ 2008-2009


(Please note that trips are subject to cancellation if there are too few students.  Trip costs are approximate and do not include spending money)

Habitat For Humanity:  Bridgeport, CT                               FALL OLE
During Fall OLE, we will travel to Bridgeport, CT to work with Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County.  We will work together to further their mission:  to build simple, decent, affordable, safe and efficient homes and to eliminate substandard housing in lower Fairfield County.  We will spend our days at a housing construction site, and stay overnight in a local church.  No construction experience is necessary -- just a willingness to help.

Backpacking and Canyoneering: Escalante, UT            FALL OLE

In this Advanced Backpacking/Introduction to Canyoneering trip to Utah ,participants will spend a week exploring the magical labyrinth of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument at the confluence of the Escalante and Colorado rivers.  Besides exploring slot canyons, the 126 ft. tall Calf Creek Falls, Coyote Gulch and learning desert backpacking skills, students will learn the history of those who explored the landscape before us: the Navajo, Mormon pilgrims, and early adventurers and explorers, as well as the current water-rights debate that now threatens the area’s natural beauty.

Avalanche Forecasting:  Jackson Hole, WY                WINTER OLE

This backcountry skiing/snowboarding trip in one of the most diverse and accessible backcountry areas in the U.S. features a Level I avalanche education curriculum.  Students will learn and practice stability assessments, and search & rescue techniques.  Students should have a high level of fitness for this trip.

Compas de Nicaragua: Managua, Nicaragua                WINTER OLE
Students and faculty will work on a number of different community service projects with Women in Action, a community-based action organization.  Students will also participate in cross-cultural experiences in addition to doing community service work.

The Sacred Valley of Peru                            SPRING BREAK

In this combined language, service, and wilderness trip, students will travel to the Sacred Valley of Peru to immerse themselves in the local environment and culture, work on local development projects, hike to Machu Picchu, backpack in the Andes, and stay with a local family.  Students should have previous travel experience and a working knowledge of the Spanish Language.

Rock climbing:  Joshua Tree National Park, CA        SPRING BREAK 1st week

The White Mountain School is offering an opportunity to experience rock climbing in one of our nation's most popular climbing Meccas. Joshua Tree National Park is located in Southern California's Mojave/ Colorado deserts approximately two to three hours from Los Angeles and Las Vegas.  Joshua Tree National Park is known for its impressive weather, unique beauty, desert wild flowers, easy access and varied rock climbing. This will be a one week spring break trip
