Mission Statement
The Outdoor Education Department exemplifies The White Mountain School mission by offering student-centered experiences that promote leadership, build judgment, instill a
sense of stewardship /community service, and enhance students' relationship
with the natural environment both physically and spiritually.
Goals
- To compliment the
mission of the school by offering instruction to enhance each student's
relationship with the surrounding environment - natural and human,
physical and spiritual.
- To equip students with the
knowledge, skills and sensitivity needed for safe and enjoyable outdoor
experience in New England and beyond.
Objectives
- To instill in our students a love of wilderness and concern for the environment
- To
encourage all faculty to utilize the wilderness setting to enhance
their classroom teaching while providing them with technical support
- To offer quality instruction in various outdoor skills with an emphasis on safety
- To provide extended wilderness trips, which utilize acquired skills while blending academics and the outdoor classroom
- To
encourage students to share the knowledge they gain with others,
thereby promoting the idea that teaching and learning are an
interactive process.
- To focus on experiential learning and a learner-centered approach.
- To
help students achieve a proficiency in Leave No Trace (LNT) camping,
various modes of wilderness travel and related activities enabling them
to continue these activities beyond formal academics.
