Edward Blacksand Character Background

Edward is the youngest child of Roland and Selene, current patriarch and matriarch of House Blacksand of Calimport, Calimshan.  Edward has four siblings all older; two brothers, Garrett and Lukian; and two sisters, Elress, and Rylee.  Roland Blacksand has always harbored the notion that Edward isn't really his offspring but instead the product of a union between his wife Selene and some young upstart from the Calimport nobility.  A notion furthered by Edward's unusual looks.  Whereas Roland Blacksand has flame red hair and dark brown eyes, Edward possess hair as dark as pitch and slate gray eyes.  Thus, Roland never really took to his youngest son and Selene also chose to avoid the boy, now just an uncomfortable reminder of her husband's distrust.  Indeed, only Rylee (the next youngest sibling) ever showed any compassion for Edward.

Thus Edward grew up largely amongst the serving and wait staff.  At an early age he became fast friends with Darik.  Darik's mother was actually Edward's wet nurse, so the two shared a connection beyond that of simple friendship.  When Edward's parents wouldn't pay the family tutor, Professor Denton Jameson, extra wages to stick around and teach Edward, he simply snuck out of the house and went over to Darik's where Jameson would pay a visit to Darik's mother before leaving the estate for the day.  Jameson would give the boys lessons through dinner and sometimes, if he got especially liquoured up, into the evenings.

Roland and Selene seemingly became more and more annoyed by Edward's very existance.  His first transgression seemed to be the fact that he was born.  Further annoyances included his lack of ability for the arcane, thus the Blacksands couldn't simply send him off to wizard's school and be done with it.  Edward always tried to avoid his parents and family.  All except for Rylee who would sit with him at  night from time to time and talk until early morning.  The one time they were discovered like this, his mother flew into a rage screaming that Rylee shouldn't be spending time with Edward, it was unseemly for an up and coming girl of the court.

Life wasn't all bad, however.  Edward and Darik only grew closer over time.  They spent their childhood on the Blacksand estate pretending to be harpers or Purple Knights.  They were always on some grand adventure, even sharing their first experience outside the walls of the estate together.  It was then that they stumbled upon the temple to Lathander late at night - it's warm and welcoming glow a beacon in the dark street.  Father Alton had taken them in and fed them, half starved and terrified from being lost for hours.  He walked them back to the Blacksand estate late that night.  Needless to say, Roland and Selene were not happy to be woken at night to accpet their child back from the Father.

After they passed the age of ten, however, they were allowed out into the city regularly, to run errands or just to get away.  It was on one of these trips that they met Benedict.  He was a boy, close to their same age, new to the city and just as lost as they had once been in the streets of Calimport.  Benedict became close friends with Edward and Darik.  The three boys hung out every day in Calimport, up to no good, on some adventure, or running errands for House Blacksand.

Life was good until the three reached the age of majority.  The age of majority, or fifteen years old, is when a Calishite is considered an adult.  Most times that means going out and earning a decent wage to help support the family, getting married, and settling down.  For the nobility, it often means the fruition of an arranged marriage that their parents set up for them many years ago.  For Edward, it meant being asked to take the cloth.  His parents made it clear in no uncertain terms that he had no future in the family, they would leave everything to his older siblings, he should make his own way.  It was right at this time too, that they gave Darik and his mother the boot - no young children meant no more need for a wet nurse and maid.

Edward went to the temple of lathander and asked Father Alton to take him in.  After hearing his story, Father Alton agreed.  Edward devoted himself to learning all he could from the venerable priest.  Darik and Benedict still came to visit him.  He would sneak them into the library so Darik especially could read and study.  Edward feared that Darik was on a path to self-destruction and told him constantly that he was praying for him.  Benedict busied himself working in the city at this odd job or that.

Edward spent five years at the temple, learning, serving, and transforming.  Father Alton taught him how to harness the divine power of lathander to work magic.  During that time, Darik went away, apprenticed to some mage.  It hurt Edward that he left, but he also understood Darik's need to learn and grow.  Not everyone could stay in Calimport forever.  Besides, he knew that he'd seem him again some day.

His duties at the temple of lathander grew and grew to the point where he was so busy, he didn't have time for much else anyway.  Until one day, exactly five years after Edward had come to him, Father Alton called him into his office.  He explained that Edward had learned everything he could from him and that he was blossoming into a fine priest of lathander.  There remained only one thing more, a final test of his devotion and good will.  Father Alton took him on his first journey outside the city walls of Calimport.  They traveled the country of Calimshan, tending to the sick, the poor, and the down trodden.  They spread the good word on lathander and worked many great deeds.  They spent several months on this quest and then returned to Calimport.

Darik and Benedict were waiting for them upon their return.  Edward was over joyed to see his two best friends, especially Darik, gone for so long.  The news they brought, was not as good, however.  It seemed that House Blacksand was in some sort of hot water with "forces that opposed them," and they were looking for Edward - under pretenses of missing their youngest child - to bring him home to be a scape goat.  The three friends agreed that they would flee Calimport for good that night.

Having packed his things, Edward headed to Father Alton's office to say his final good byes.  As he approached, he heard heated voices.  The last thing he heard was Father Alton scream that House Blacksand had no more claim to Edward, he now belonged to the morning lord.  With that, he heard Alton's shrieks as someone, or something killed him.  Edward burst in too late and came upon a gruesome scene indeed.  There were his father and his oldest brother Garrett.  His father had driven the point of his longsword through Alton's chest.  Edward cursed them and fled.  He met up with Darik and Benedict and together, they fled the city, avoiding several patrols of House Blacksand men.

They made it out into the country at large where they eventually met up with two other wanderers.  They joined forces for future adventures.
