Middle School Student Tech Corps

Student Tech Corps at our middle schools is specialized IT training for students that allows them to assist the technology staff and teachers with maintenance and troubleshooting of technology issues at their school. Student Tech Corps begins with the teacher selection process followed by parent permission and then training. After training, the student will be available to assist in maintenance and troubleshooting for their academic teachers. They will also be available once or twice a month during after school hours to assist the Technology Specialist. After school participation is scheduled the same week and day for each month. It is not mandatory for perfect attendance during the afterschool sessions but regular attendance is necessary for continued participation in Student Tech Corps. There will be  a maximum of three students scheduled for each after school session.

Technology Training will include:

  1. Computer Maintenance and Upgrading: This module provides students with manipulative skills as they perform a series of real-life maintenance and upgrading exercises on a fully functional PC. Typical exploratory topic areas include investigating the evolution of computers, selecting storage tapes, disks and drives, and expanding the computer system plus supervised hands-on training.
  2. Computer Troubleshooting: Students use a ‘virtual’ computer troubleshooting system to learn logical troubleshooting procedures for PC systems. Typical exploratory topic areas include troubleshooting methodology, preventive maintenance, and hardware and software compatibility and supervised hands-on training.

Student Tech Corps will provide much needed technical support at the school building level, provide valuable technology and general work place skills for students, and provide an enriching, wholesome and motivating opportunity for students to participate in while providing value to their school.

Requirements for participation:

1.      be a student in good standing

2.      be able to work independently

3.      be reliable

4.      be trustworthy

5.      have overall professionalism

6.      successfully participate in the required training

Martha Puckett students will meet on Monday and Arthur Williams students will meet on Thursday. A calendar will be provided once the training begins. If there is ever a scheduling problem parents may call Michael Stokes cell phone at 256-0725 or home at 588-9747.

Michael Stokes is the assigned Technology Specialist for both middle schools. He has been with the Wayne County School system since 2000 and previously worked with teenagers in a church setting for 25 years. Michael has been working with computer technology since 1981.
